Hi,

I was wondering what the best lvl is to dualclass a fighter to a mage. When searching on old topics there seems to be a discussion on wether to switch on lvl 9 or lvl 13.
Can someone explain why you should change at lvl9 or 13 in the first place and what the best moment is. I'm a lvl 9 fighter now (pretty new at AD&D) and want to dualclass as a mage but I don't know when to switch.

Thnx

If you have tob or plan to install it with this saved game be ware that dual classing has certain drawbacks with tob. one class will be higher than the other, the second, and you will get the quest level stuff in the second class, but not the first. thats why multi is so evil with tob. Jaheira for example, eventually gets greater whirlwind and greater elemental summoning. and with watchers keep, which has around 1.5 million exp if you thrash everyone, the slower progression is not such an issue anymore. the quest abilities, especially the mage and druid abilities make the multiclass killer

You should dual as soon as you're satisfied with what you've got from the first class. For a Fighter/Mage I recommend dualing at level 9. You take full advantage of the Fighter's Hit Dice (after level 9 they no longer get up to 10 HP + Con bonus), get a fairly low THAC0 and seven proficiency points. Most important, you'll soon regain the Fighter class and play the character you wanted in the first place. IMO, a lot of people want the *full* advantages of both classes and therefor dual to late, ending up playing, as in this case, first an ordinary Fighter and then a low level Mage.
