I've recently started an Elf Mage, and am wondering; what is the easiest way for a non-melee character to deal with bats? My spellbooks recharge very slowly, and obviously scrolls are one-time use. I can't attack fast enough to be able to hit them before they swoop past, and my mage is a moron when it comes to ranged weaponry. Basically, since I can't really hit any of them, a decent group of bats will either cost way too many potions, or otherwise be a death sentence. Either way, I typically get frustrated and quit playing for a while.
Normally, with my fighter, I just walk backwards and attack; his speed is such that he can actually start a new attack before the animation for the previous attack has finished. This works pretty well for bees and wolves, also. My mage, however, is very slow, and also shorter than my Urgoth fighter, thus presumably placing his weapon further from the enemy.
I have 2 low-level spells that would most likely recharge faster than my fireball, but it's stupid to have to expend all my spellbook charges on a stupid random bat encounter. There has to be an easier way. Or, should I just reload the game whenever a bat encounter loads, knowing what the outcome will be?
Thanks for the advice. Lateron.
Best way to kill bats en masse.
Blast nova. Save up and buy a lot of them. There isn't a time limit in the game, so feel free to rest at fireplaces for as long as it takes to recharge your spells.

I've found that starting out as a mage for any character is the closest suicidal thing that you can do. They don't give you enough spells in the beginning of the game. And it cost too many ADV points to increase Arcane Magic Skill when you need to increase you melee skills (Weapon skill, Armor skill, and Attributes).
As an early mage character, I always made my mages into melee characters in the beginning parts of the game. At about level 14-16, at around the time I enter Castle Ulm, I'll make sure that I have 5-10 Blast Nova's and 1-3 Ice Nova's. (I of course never took advantage of the HOnor stat and Bargain skill to cheat to make gobs of money buying and reselling to make money, so it was harder for me to build my mages...but, legit).
Mage/Sorcerer/Enchantress/Wizard...just owns...I ended just quitting as I could blow away anything (pretty much) with one Blast Nova in (Hard Mode).
It's too bad that this game did not tailor to making it possible to play a mage style of playing from the beginning of the game. So you will have to play melee up until you get quite some amount of money to buy a good amount of spells, at least your 2nd mage class tier(s), Arcane magic/Celestial Magic up to 10, Scribe/Channel up to 3-5.

here are a few tricks to deal with bats.
1. Arcane magic spell fire burst
I've found this spell to be the most versitile one in the game both damage and range of motion and flexibility. it lets yo usummon 2 fireballs at once and throw them at your opponents. and if you are quick enough with the keys that turn you left and right, you can hit 2 opponents at once. If you have a lot of them in stock you can turn around in a circle and get all of your opponents with fast fire burst swarms. think covering fire for multi player.
2. nether magic spells pain sting and nether blast. these are like the only direct damage nether spells and if yo uhave the nether katals can be replenished easily. pain sting more easily then nether blast.
3. nether magic summon bats summon bats to fight bats. enough said.
again easily replenished nether katals.
4. get athletics up and jump up and backflip up and swing them out of the sky with your sword or axe.
5. Shoot them down with a bow and arrow or a shuriken or throwing dagger.
