regarding skill levels and bonuses

Hi,

I have a question regarding skill levels. My current character can have a sneak skill of 125 (with items) but the basic skill is like 95. As soon as the sneak skill goes to 100, I can ignore AC.

But, do I have to receive the information that "your sneak is like a wind in the shadow...blah blah...successful hit ignores armor" in order to receive the bonus? In other words, is my 125 sneak skill treated as <100 until the basic value turns into 100? Or does the ignore AC bonus apply nonetheless?

Regards,

Robot [F]

It seems rather unfair, but until you ACTUALLY hit 100, you don't get the 'ignore armour' bonus.

I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure that I have increased a skill to the next milestone level with performance-enhancing items equipped and received the appropriate message. e.g. my natural sneak was 44, 49 with a sneak +5 ring or something, and the next time my sneak skill increased while I was wearing the ring (now 45 natural/50 with ring), I got the Journeyman sneak message.

So, if I had to guess, I'd say yes. You could always test it the next time you see a bad guy in heavy armor. Save game, sneak attack with items equipped, see what happens. Load game, sneak attack with items unequipped, see what happens. If he dies with the items equipped but just gets annoyed with the items unequipped, I'd say the items are probably boosting you into the "Master Sneak" category.

Hm. I was once wearing gauntlets that enhanced Armourer skill; they took me above Journeyman level, but when I tried to repair enchanted weapons I still got the message that I couldn't repair 'em yet.

Seems Belthan and I have different experience! Oh, well, that's games for you!

2 possibilities:

1) I had the ring equipped when I got the skill increase. Maybe if I had it unequipped, increased skill, and then put it on, it wouldn't have counted. Games do indeed sometimes have exploitable glitches.

2) I was hallucinating :)

Either way, from what Fljotsdale said, I'm officially changing my answer to "no".

No, no! Belthan! It's a definite 'maybe'!

Anyway, I intend to try your suggestion and see what happens. :) I equip/unequip items at need, so I think I have rarely - if ever - been wearing an appropriate item at skill level-up.

I had the same issue with Armourer when I boosted it with items, but not with say for example Security when I boosted it with the Skeleton Key. I was unable to repair magical items a Journeyman, but did not break hammers when boosted above Master. It seemed inconsistant so I assumed that it was a glitch.

Very likely, RavenBlackthorn. Bethesda are renowned for that type of thing. Excellent games, but they don't tidy up properly. They should get a woman in to do the 'housework'. ;) :mischief:
