The Drow Captain

When I was dueling the Drow Captain in Sendai's lair with my bard, almost every hit he would get on me killed me instantly. I tried several times, but a few rounds of close combat would end with a one hit kill.
Because I could not win in close combat, I ended up running with my boots of speed and throwing my Crimson Dart+3 whenever I had enough distance.
Afterwards, I picked up his weapon and I remember it being a Drow Scimitar+3 (he might have been dual-wielding two of these...I cannot remember). The description of the scimitar does not say it has 10% instant kill or any kind of vorpal ability. But, I remember reading in a post that certain drow weapons have a bard-slaying ability. Needless to say, the Drow Scimitar+3 had no such ability listed.
What caused those instant kills?
(I do not know if the insta-kills are bard specific, as I have only played through with a bard.)

I don't recall any problems having a jester fight that smug drow captain. Celestial Fury then Axe of Unyielding while stunned took care of him. Then again, I remembered your older posts and just had the cleric cast death ward just in case before the battle .

The Drow captain is a high level fighter. He is using the *smite* special ability on you. You must save vs death or be stunned. Unless you have good protections and/or a lot of hits, that will kill you.
I find that if you have any fighting ability at all *and* the hit points to go with it (the bard doesn't), the Drow captain is fairly easy. Otherwise he is a pain in the neck.

That must be it. I had the jester imbibe potion of invulnerability and had my cleric cast chaotic commands just in case.
Do you think he also uses greater deathblow?
Nice to see that drow captain stunned and helpless.

Greater deathblow only works on enemies 12th level (or HD) or lower.

Deathblows are the most useless abilities..... All the enemies you face by the time you get the ability are above level 12......

Yeah I just stock up on hardiness and GWW. I do put points towards critical strike but that's it.

Yeah, I know that greater deathblow is only SUPPOSED to work on enemies 12th and below, but the Drow Captain cheats....so what else is new? A lot of NPCs use abilities in ways that aren't strictly legal. Anyhoo....I think that is the answer to your question.

Oh...I see, thanks. I just wished it wouldn't automatically go to the death movie when you die so you could see what killed you. I don't remember seeing a "Drow Captain (or whatever his name was): Greater Deathblow (or smite)" right before I died.
