Is there any real point in acqiuring those? I mean, are there situations or quests in the game that cannot be solved without using lockpicking and stealing?

Well, you dont nessercarilly need it, but if you aquire it you can become a thief, thus gaining you extra gold and items, I think the best thing you can steal is obsian? And also with them two you can gain the title "Thief".
