Hopefully we haven't had a topic exactly like this.. I did some searches and didn't find anything that quite matched

Anyway, I was thinking about the games that got me interested in gaming, which led to some thoughts on the first games I played.
My introduction to gaming was actually on a Super Nintendo Entertainment System on which I played things like [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger"]Chrono Trigger[/url] and [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_RPG:_Legend_of_the_Seven_Stars"]Super Mario: Legend of the Seven Stars[/url].These games were not terribly in depth, but they were great fun!
On the same machine I also played one of the Ultima games, I can't recall the title.. but it involved ant tunnels, portals, and a *huge* area to explore.

Then I got a "super fast" Pentium 1...
On it I played [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst"]Myst[/url], [url="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/spqrtheempiresdarkesthour/review.html?sid=2533146"]SPQR: The Empire's Darkest Hour[/url], some game about Atlantis, a couple of the [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lands_of_Lore"]Lands of Lore[/url] titles... and [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_McGee's_Alice"]American McGee's Alice[/url]. The latter is the closest thing I've ever really played to a slice and dice game, but with the wonderfully warped atmosphere, dialogue and background it was great!
The same machine allowed me to play BG1... and then I got hooked on Black Isle. *nostalgic sigh*


Other stories of lost innocence?

Note: I put this in SYM rather than RPG Discussion because I figured people would also be mentioning games that were not RPGs, I hope that's okay.

Have you ever played the first two "Leisure Suit Larry" games? When you had to type commands like "insert airsick bag into hair rejuvenator"?

LMAO! No, I haven't, but they sound like the kind of thing I would enjoy

I played them on my mighty 286 and they were wickedly hilarious, especially the second one. Later games of the series were disappointing.
I have fond memories of some other Sierra series like the first few "King Quest" and "Hero Quest" games.

It has to be Daggerfall. Got me hooked on gaming - then I could find nothing like it on the market. Grr!

So... I saw and bought a game called Albion. Nothing like Daggerfall, but I liked it a lot and wrote a comprehensive walkthough for it - for myself!

Then I found Might & Magic. (Never like Heros of M&M, though)

And Baldur's Gate...

Planescape Torment...

And so on...

Zelda, the first one. Not like this new crap they put out for N64 and Gamecube. Then, Metroid for Nintendo. Oh, I spent hours and hours and hours with those two.

After that, I got hooked on Sega Genesis. The game Shining Force was, is and will always be my all time favorite game and game series. It is like fantasy warfare chess, with character progression. It was great to play when I was younger.

After that, Daggerfall, my intro to PC gaming. I played this when it first came out on my friends computer. It crashed mine, so I kept wandering over to his house to play it. Oh, the fun I had with that. I recall when we figured out how to get into the game and change our characters around. Jumping over houses to get away from guards was wicked fun. Jumping onto houses to fire arrows at guards was even more fun. I bought Morrowind when it came out, and had to let it sit on a shelf for a year before I had a computer that would run it. So sad that was.

The whole ES series is noteworthy. Arena was awsome. That was a game I could play 24/7 if that was possible. It is still standing on a shelf in my gaming den.
Daggerfall was very good (with the patches).
Battlespire was a failure IMO but Redguard was the best adventure game ever.
Oddly enough, I did not enjoy Morrowind as much, maybe because I was already spoiled by other great RPGs...

Morrowind was good - but the graphics were depressingly drab. I hated the drabness of it. But I played it over and over, in spite of that!

Ultima Underworld.

I don't think I slept for over a week.

I had dabbled in Consoles and Adventure (etc) on mainframes but I think that was just foreplay.

I'd say the one game that really got me into gaming was either Super Mario Bros. 3 for the original Nintendo or Final Fantasy 2 (FF4 by Japanese numeration) for the SNES. More likely the latter. Of course, this was only when I was less than 10 years old.

I'm not really into present day consoles, but I'm getting tempted to see if I can track down an old NES and play some of those old games, because many of them were a lot of fun.

If it were just the graphics in Morrowind that put you off, you might want to try some of texture replacers if you give the game another go sometime. lol! You mean no dedicated serial monagamy?

Definitely Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES. After that, probably Mortal Kombat on Sega.

I was waiting for somebody to mention that. I actually replayed the UU2 few months ago... It was fun. One of my all-time favorites.
Yes, I remember playing this game day and night.
I also attempted to play Ultima V: Lasarus (the remake) but it was not that much fun.

My first PC game was on a Radio Shack Color Computer. It was a Star Trek game that I had to type in basic code for then save to a cassette tape. I later added my own code to create a modded version. The graphics consisted of alpha-numeric characters (#, <o>, K, etc) similar to a game called "rogue", a dungeon adventure game populated with centaurs, kestrels, vampires, and other odd creatures.

The first (on so far only) online game I have played is Far Cry, a first person shooter.

I almost had an exclusive relationship with BG2 but found that it was possible to play civ III on the laptop while waiting for a party to traverse areas.....

@ Lady Dragonfly - UUII was a bit of a disappointment for me (Although I played it essentially non-stop). I think that (despite several actual improvements) the first experience of UU was that earth shattering for me. - Curdis !

Interesting thread, though the title is kind of odd.

Anyway, my introduction to gaming was through very old video-games like the first Donkey Kong and Super Mario Brothers. Later, my foray into PC gaming happened when I got my first computer, a 486, and the first games that I played were Doom, Duke Nukem and some other games that I can't remember. These are the few games that got me started into PC gaming.

As for RPGs, it's Final Fantasy 7&8 and Grandia 2.

lol, humour me, I was bored, and I found it mildly more interesting than "Your Very First Games"

First game I played on my powerhourse of 2x86 12mHz with 1 MB RAM and 20 MB harddrive back in the old days was Ports of Call because it was included in the software pack. After that I played a RPGish game called Phantasia I think and then Wing Commander. These games were responsible for my so far 15 year in gaming on PC.

I almost forgot one. The first game to get me SERIOUSLY hooked on gaming was Half-Life. Good times.

Thanks for the links, dragon wench. But it wasn't JUST the dull graphics - I got so I knew the game backwards! I always knew exactly where I was and exactly what I would find there, and exactly how to play it with the current character. The dull graphics were just an added factor in my eventual utter boredom with game and it's expansions.
Of course, there are a lot of dull graphics in Oblivion as well - all those dark candlelit interiors and gloomy undergound locations; but at least you come out into nice bright daylight with vibrant colours (except when it's raining fit to bust!) which makes it a much more inviting game! Besides, I haven't found everything there is to find, yet...
But a spot of colour MIGHT improve Morrowind!:laugh:
