OK, I am investigating disappearances for gro'Bash in a small village near Cheydinhall, and I traced the missing persons to this small cave guarded by three rather nasty Will o'the Wisps. After dispatching them, I made my way in and killed several trolls. My green quest arrow led me to a chamber where I found
(1) A troll, whose soul I used to recharge my Staff of Fire
(2) Two dead zombies
(3) A chest containing a magic ring and some gold.
(4) Some skeletons on the floor.
My quest map shows a green arrow right in front of me in this chamber. There are no doors, hatches, and no chambers above or below it. Nothing I have picked up or looked at triggers an update in my quest log, nor are there any other markers on my map, even when I proceeded to the deeper parts of the cave. The dead troll had nothing on him save some troll fat and my Elven Arrow.
What am I missing? Where should I be looking?

Do you have Oblivion on Xbox 360 or on PC?
There are couple bugs with the "Mystery at Harlun's Watch" quest. If you have been in that cave before starting the quest there will be no bodies where the quest marker is pointing at. This will prevent you from finishing the quest. Luckily, the 1.1.511 patch has fixed this problem.
However there is a way to work around this if you are playing on the PC. Open the console and type “setstage FGC10Swamp 40”. This will move the quest forward and you should see a pop up telling that you have found the bodies.
Now you should be able to continue your quest and kill the remaining of trolls in the cave, when they are all dead you should have an “all clear” message. If there are problems getting this message feel free to type “set FGC10Swamp.trollsdead to 15” in the console.
Then you can return to the Harlun’s Watch and tell them about the villagers.
That is the case if you are on PC.
If you are playing with the Xbox, I do not know how to help you. Well expect advising to re-enter the cave but it will most likely have no effect.

OK . . . without sounding too dumb here . . .
I've never used the console in Oblivion before, and the book doesn't tell me how to open it . . . so what is the command to open the console?
Sorry . . . .

The console is accessed by hitting the tilde "~" key, which on most keyboards is to the left of the "1" and under of the "Esc" key.

On American keyboards, at least, it also requires using Shift to get to the tilde.

That isn't where my ~key is on my old Microsoft Natural keyboard! (It's on the right, above Shift, with the # mark also on it. And it's NOT the console key! ).
But the key you want, Indianasmith, is, as Faberge said, immediately below the Esc key, to the left of the 1 key; it is also immediately above the Tab key. You can't miss it!

Eh...go figure, I'm stuck on this Fighters' Guild mission as well with this bug. I've located the missing villagers and the quest log instructed me to kill the Trolls in the caves and I whiped them all out. But after running around the caverns for a good 15 minutes, couldn't help any other trolls and no message prompted that I've killed them all.
Think i'll have to use those console commands provided...hope it works...cheers.
