Hey,

What do you recommend in the way of graphics cards to run Oblivion with little to no problems such as crashing. I've a Nvidia GeForce FX series card that just isn't up to the task. I had to download Oldblivion to play the game.

So I'm not looking to spend millions on a new card somwhere in the pricerange of 150 -200 $ to purchase a card.

Thanks,
Gramps

Amazon.com: NVidia GeForce 6600 512MB PCI Express Video Card w/DVI/TVOut: Electronics

That card my friend would do you quite well with oblivion, I would estimate "medium" graphics.

Danke

Thanks,

Do you know if Ubuntu Linux can auto config it? or is there a royal pain in the but involved to get it working?

Just another question, I understand that Cedega supports Oblivion, does it in turn support OldBlivion. Just wondering in case I cannot get the card, I can at least get everything set up until I purchase the card.

I have no idea, never worked with Linux and have no clue what Cadega is.

You might ask about that in the tech support.

When I needed a graphics card, I went for the Saphire ATI Radeon x1600 pro 512mb, which only cost $129 american (somehow) and it can run everything on full graphics with no lagging. Also, when I originally bought one, it had the wrong interface (PCI-E, but I had AGP8X  ), but then I sold it on Ebay for $30 more than I bought it for :D .

Uhh

I'm not the most experienced person with computer hardware, more specifically graphics cards. I'm running the FX 5200 ( i know i said 2500 but i looked it up lol ) and I has two input for the monitor. One that is most widly used and one that isn't. I believe the Radeons have a monitor imput that isn't the one most commonly used therefore prolly not going for it unless you have a quick CHEAP solution for it.

I had a problem. Whenever someone used chameleon or invisibility spell in my sight range there was a lot of static on the screen, just could not work it out why it was happening. Has anybody here had the same problem?

Static?

Try opening up your machine and taking a vacume to it and cleaning out the dust. Take out the card and reset it. If could be somthing with that, not the one to tell you, but thats where i would start.

Eh...pardon ?

Most newer cards don't come with the old VGA plugin anymore, they use DVI ( besides you easily get adapters ).
Most ATI cards come in the XTX, XT, XL, PRO, GT, GTO versions ( first one is the highest version ), that's what makes the cards cheaper or more expensive. Then there are All-In-Wonder cards, which are TV tuner cards too ( these usually have an additional SVideo or Component plugin for the TV ).

For Oblivion I wouldn't start with anything less then the older ATI X800 XT or ATI X850 Pro cards or G6800 series for Nvidia. If you want to invest a bit, the new Nvidia Geforce 7900 GTO from MSI ( 512 MB RAM ) costs about 250 € ( around 280 $ ) and is comparable to Geforce cards 100 to 150 bucks more ( don't know if it comes in AGP and PCIe though ).

Well, that's like asking why the price range for the new 3.8 ghz processor that I'm buying is in between $221 and $920 american: some people sell at reasonable prices, some people seem to want to go bankrupt, and some people think they can get away selling something at 250% of it's real value. Oh, and I got mine off of ebay, if that makes much of a difference :D
