there are MANY plain ones or some with no effect but with i think a different description.
other than selling, is there a point to these gems and rings and stuff?
ex. custom enchantments or some sort of collector's goal?

Some gems are to be used for quests.
Other than that, you can just sell them. Be careful not to sell an unidentified necklace.

I have yet to play the game all the way through, so I cannot say for sure. However, as it is based on the DnD pen and paper RPG, I am assuming they are simply a form of treasure handed out to produce you with wealth. Something different from tossing piles of coins your way. A little variety in the mix. Stumbling on an emerald one day, and then a jade necklace the next is more interesting than find gold, gold and gold every day.

I was really not willing to sell many of mine until i was FORCED TO since im really running low on space... (i hold like 3 gem-bag full of gems or more)
so............. i thought if they are not for too much stuff then i just sell them
i was thinking maybe they are for enchantment...
ex. ring of "x" + gem of this and that + pay this NPC = WALLA, custom ring!
guess not =.-;

For anyone (familiar with D&D or not), some descriptions of gems, rings can mislead to think they might be of value later (one says something like, Adventurers use these rings to enchant spells on): like maybe coming across a lab or spell later on might actually enchant a mundane ring into something "else." In this game, any "special"/ magical purpose is readily obvious. NPC's will let you know if they need anything, and there's only one kind of gem that does solve an area (which might require a spoiler since it's a subtle hint).
Otherwise, they are meant for variety as an earlier post mentioned. Priests and Shamans need holy symbols, so finding cowrie shells, necklaces off from them is common. It's been my experience that except for the diamonds, it's a waste of space and time to horde the trinkets from gems to mundane weapons & armor after the beginning of the game (it takes so much time to click "open container" and expunge the contents one by one until empty). I tend to find the good stuff I need instead of selling gems/jewelry.
