I've always succeeded in keeping the bridge safe and defeating the villains, however, the walkthrough suggests success isn't needed to proceed with the game. Besides getting less experience, does anyone know how "not" protecting the bridge changes the game?
If there is an effect (like maybe an additional battle somewhere, some section later in the game becoming a more difficult encounter, etc.), I'm curious about other quests to perhaps intentionally botch to see the difference.

the bridge broke for me 2 different ways
1. i kept talking to some wierd elf lady
2. even if i didnt talk to her and defeat the 2 giants that was smashing the bridge, bridge breaks ANYWAY... :/

I am curious though why the bridge's destruction or protection would prove significant since the river is currently frozen solid (so solid that nothing else happens when the damn is weakened) and should be traversable in an emergency. Also, I'd think the allies should have enough high level spell capabilities to permit either a mending or warp wood spell to repair the posts. (Shouldn't the Ogres be "under" the bridge anyway? )
It's still a very enjoyable part in the game, and one of my favorites.

I've played the game having failed to save the bridge, before I knew I was supposed to do that. And the only difference I noticed, was that you get greeted as less of a hero, back in Targos. I don't remember any other difference at all. I think the game just moves on.
But I'm not absolutely sure of this, so I hope someone will post, who is sure.
(yeah, the ogres should be under the bridge)

I played all of the way through the first section of the game twice. Once with saving the bridge the first time, the second, I failed to save it. I cannot remember for certain, but I think it has to do with the rewards that you recieve as the only difference. I don't believe there are any extra encounters you need to deal with for that breaking.

I'm at the Goblin warren now. But to my knowledge the only diffrence is, that you get some extra experience when you save the bridge after your cleared all the monster from the area. This you wont get when the bridge is destroyed.
Oh and lord Ulbrec will say somethign diffrent when at the start of teh conversation when you return to him.
Either way you'll still get the same payment for the job though.

As far as I recall, the only bonus you get for saving the bridge is extra experience, and I slightly warmer welcome from Lord Ulbrec. I can't really remember the reason, but the Neverwinter reinforcements can't get past the bridge even if it's remained intact. The game progresses the same whether you save the bridge or not.
