Running, or...not.
After entering the first dungeon, I found that my PC and the village fighter were moving at a walk. This continued when we left, and after I returned to the village. If I click on treasure to pick up, a door to enter, or a person to speak to, I run, otherwise, I have to walk. I'm not encumbered in the slightest. Any ideas what's going on?

Upon reloading from the game, the problem is still there, but after reloading from the desktop, the problem vanishes. However, once my PC is encumbered, even after the encumbrance is removed, the effect returns and won't leave.

I can't help thinking it might be tied to inventory, rather than encumbrance. I just started playing again, and moved a few items from my PC's inventory to that of a party NPC. When I started moving again, both characters once again couldn't run.

Are you by chance looking around, sensing and investigating traps too? I had that a couple of times, didn't get it until the manual pointed me toward a very small icon on the lower right of the HUD. Duh!

Afraid not. Simply whichever of my three characters is in the lead stops moving at above a walk. They're not searching, or doing anything else. If I try hitting an F key to switch characters, I can't any longer. Instead, the F key brings up the little reversed image icon that indicates an action to take place on that character. I have to double-click a portrait to switch characters.
It's strange, and apparently, moving things between inventories isn't the problem.

On another site, in the NWN2 forum, there is a comment about how badly bugged the game is, and that there is already a BIG patch available to download if you have broadband. The poster didn't give a link, though.

Yes, that's the 1.01 patch. Downloaded it as soon as I'd installed the game. (Damn thing took more than 90 minutes to patch!) But all my gameplay has been post patch.Fljotsdale wrote:On another site, in the NWN2 forum, there is a comment about how badly bugged the game is, and that there is already a BIG patch available to download if you have broadband. And I can't download it at all because my games computer isn't on-line. And even if I save it to a disc, the game computer antivirus isn't up to date...

But it we could stay on subject, I'd appreciate it. Perhaps somebody else, here, has had a similar experience, or has read about it. Which is why I started this thread.

I don't know if this applies, but you have to have at least 4 free gigabytes to let it extract and compile your files. It is mentioned somewhere, but not while you're patching. I've also heard that the next patch will require 7 gigabytes, so you might want to clean up a little.fable wrote: (Damn thing took more than 90 minutes to patch!)

Wow...90 minutes...what did ya do ?
The patch showed up as about 87 MByte if I remember correctly, took me not long to download ( Love my 6 Mbit DSL line ). Patching took about 5 minutes or so...
And I haven't encountered your problem with not running yet...Have you checked if your character was infected with a disease or venom during the time he could walk only ?

Something like that, yes. These aren't just replacement parts in a zip though. Script code can be compressed *really* well, much better than your average mp3 or jpeg. Then the whole thing has to be compiled into the existing installation, which sort of makes a second copy of your installation for a while until it can be overwritten.
Why the hassle? To avoid 4 gigabyte patches, methinks. There's no sense to letting people download that much data.

Well, this sounds odd. Nobody else is reporting the problem, so that makes me think fable is doing something wrong. But fable has been playing rpgs for a long time, so that makes me think it's a bug in the game.
The shift key forces you to walk. You're not pressing that, are you? Also, for me (and according to the manual), the F key brings up the quickcast menu, and I don't even see a key that's suposed to switch the active party member. So you might want to check your key mappings to see if anything weird is going on there.
And... your character will start walking if you reach about 75% of your carrying capacity. Do you still have the walking problem after you've dumped all your excess equipment on a shopkeeper?

I have 8 GB still free on that partition.Tricky wrote:I don't know if this applies, but you have to have at least 4 free gigabytes to let it extract and compile your files. Then I am very much stumped.

But defragging should account for general stuttering and loading problems--not the loss of running at seemingly odd intervals (while running still works for the opposition). It sounds to me like a coding issue. I was just curious if anybody else had discovered this, yet.Tricky wrote:Then I am very much stumped.

I hate being in terra incognita, at least where game bugs are concerned.

Coding issues can vary, but this just sounds weird if you are the only one experiencing it. Personally, I would suggest making sure that your keyboard is clean, even the input to your tower. Reboot, try it again, and if that occurs, perhaps start up a new game and see if that one has the same troubles? If they both still have trouble...it could be that you may have a corrupted install. I have had that happen. A stutter in the install process could affect things I think.
If your old one has the problem and the new one does not, well then....it could just be a fluke in the saving process maybe? *shrugs* I dunno. If logic doesn't follow the problem, illogical solutions may prevail.

This might be silly but try checking what your partymember his settings are on, maybe it has to do with the followdistance or speed, also when you move the mousepointer away from your character I found he starts to run nearly at the edge of the screen. One bug I found was when I switch from 1280 / 1024 to 1024 / 786 that my characters wouldn't run anymore because my mouse wouldn't go far enough. Please note that I always move by using the mousedragging option not the click and walk method.
