Does XP get split amongst party members, ala BG2, or does the main character get all the XP, with his party members advancing with him?

The companions follow in your characters wake with XP. I am not entirely certain how this words, but I did test something to see if I could figure it out. I dropped XP onto my character through the Debugmode and they all leveled. I dropped XP on Khelgar and only he leveled. When I then put XP on my character to make him catch up, my whole group leveled again, with the dwarf ahead of everyone else.
Whether the XP is split or not I do not know. I just know what you see on the screen as "27 XP gained" or whatever it says, thats what your character is getting. Once I get through the game and can anticipate what I will be dealing with, I will probably try to put together a better character build and attempt to go solo without other companions to see if I get more XP that way.

If XP is indeed split, going solo, would be a game killer in my opinion. The game does a pretty good job of having you at the appropriate level whilst playing certain missions. Going solo would make you level 20 when you should be level 10 or so probably.
The point? I'd imagine XP is not split.

The XP dont splits.
But it is reduced by 20% for your character if you multiclassed from something that`s not your race`s favored class

The XP goes fully to your main character, and as said the party levels up with him - so if a partymember is left in town and you fetch him, he'll level up to your level.
However, XP distribution to your main character is depending on your difficulty rating, meaning how many people you have in your party, summons, companions etc - and of course, XP penalty from multiclassing.
I have not tested it out, so I do not know the exact amount, but in NwN1 I recall each additional character you had with you (whether it was henchmen, summons etc) modified your XP gain as if you were 1 level higher. (So a L2 + 1 henchmen got XP as a L3).
I would think it is somewhat similar here, as it is the easiest method of calculating XP - but as said - I've not tested it out, so it is currently only speculation.
