I wonder, that is there any chance to save those Solamnian knights?
Do I have to be a mage of some class only, or do they have to live in krynn forever?

Yes, you have to be a mage and get Planas Sphere as your Fortress. After that there's a quest line where you send them back, iirc.

Also be aware that there is a mod (Unfinished Business I think) which allows you to do this regardless of class.

Also be aware that there is a mod (Unfinished Business I think) which allows you to do this regardless of class.
I think its SimDingo's Quest Pack (also found at PPG)
