Help! Ilyich turns into a mouse!

My brother just gave me this game. I got it installed (Both SOA and ToB) as well as the newest patch. He also told me to add the Big Picture mod which I did (not sure if that matters for this question or not)
I liked the game so far until I get told to get the acorns and then I go to fight Ilyich and every time he turns into a mouse and disappears through a hole in the wall...
I read 2 FAQ/Walkthroughs and went to 3 different online help sites and all any of them say is "Go to the room where Ilyich is, kill him and search him for the acorns"
Not a single place says ANYTHING about him turning into a mouse and disappearing.
So I've reloaded like literally 70 times and try to kill him but the same keeps happening every time.
I can't take this anymore!
How do I get the acorns from him if he disappears as a mouse through a hole in the wall everytime?
And why can't I find any mention of this in any faq or anywhere?
I appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Allea

(Edit: BTW, I asked my brother but he said he doesn't remember ever having any problem and doesn't remember what I need to do.)

That is not supposed happen. My version is not modded but it is patched. Within it, the battle sequence goes normally. So, as the only difference that has been stated between out versions is the module, I'll have to say that it is the problem.

Looks like a mod. Big Picture is a pretty large mod as far as I know, although I never used it, so it could well be. I suggest that for starting out, you should play a vanilla game, or with gameplay modifications / bugfixes only (official patch, ease-of-use, G3 or Baldurdash fixes).

Edit: well, you might want to check the readme/forums/FAQ for Big Picture, if you want to keep it installed. Probably it says something about your problem there.

The Big Picture Mod is filled with all kinds of bugs, and it sounds like Ilyich turning into a mouse is one big bug. I've tried the Mod several months back, but quickly abandoned it simply for the above mentioned reason. So, just like Thar, I suggest you try to play the vanilla game first (with official patches, of course). It'll be large enough if you play this game for the first time; you really don't need to double its size with Big Picture.

If you need any more help, just knock on our door. :)

Him turning into a mouse is not a bug. During the first fight by the library he will do that and escape thru a hole in a wall. You will meet him later to complete the fight.

Thanks for the replies. :)
I hate using cheats but in ths instance I used the console create item cheat to give me acorns (and only acorns...no boots of boost all stats +50 or anything else...lol) and then quit playing for the night after reloading that fight so many times I was a bit tired.
If I run into Ilyich again later I'll just leave his acorns behind since the dryads acknowledged my cheat ones already so they will work for the queen later too.
I'm leaving Big Picture on though cause I don't want to cause errors by just removing it and I don't want to have to do a whole clean reinstall and restart unless it just gets WAY too buggy down the line.
Anyway...thanks again for the help and chances are over the next few weeks I may get to be a well known question asker around here...
I'm one of those "lucky I'm cute cause I'm not too bright" kinda girls...lol.

Echo previous posts about using only the vanilla game when playing your virgin adventure. Besides seeing the game the way the designers meant it to be, consider that you may encounter a bug caused by this mod that does not allow the main game to continue. And if you've already gotten through half the game or more... that would suck! Then you'd have to uninstall & reinstall anyways.

And you don't have to re-start to re-install. You could always copy your Save folder to a Temp folder, uninstall & reinstall the game (main game, expansion, & expansion patch), and copy back your Save folder. A few minutes spent now might save a huge headache later.
