veil of merdelain, need help, spoilerish

So I'm in the big stone room with the blots of black fog. I've killed all the monsters but I cant figure out what to do now. The only stairs I see, aside from the ones I came in on, are blocked by the black fog. Does anyone remember what I'm supposed to do? Thanks.

If I remember right. the black fog are portal.

One would think that in the twenty minutes I spent trying to figure out what the hell was going on I wouldve at least once tried clicking on the fog. Guess not
