I played a monk on my second time through and holy God... by the endgame the monk could essentially walkthrough and smite anything in his path, plus Quivering Palm. Once it hits, enemies must roll a save or die. It's cool to take down dragons with one hit. But for further discussions, there are other more in-depth posts here about what characters people like playing. Worth checking out.

If you plan on playing the game more than once I think you should start with a "normal" character (i.e. not a kit) in order to get to know the game and what you in particular find fascinating. The second time you should experiment with the kits and maybe dual-classing and stuff. It is much more fun if you know all the details - the advantages and disadvantages to the characters, when to dual-class and so on. But as Flinfman says - there are a lot of posts about the subject that might have your interest.

The blade is kinda kick-arse bard, so from my point of view playing a bard is not the easiest thing in BG2, especially if you are not into making a party of your own (or at least 3-4 characters) and rely on NPC's to complete the game.
It will make things not so easy for you, hence playing with a strong fighting type or a powerfull mage, but it is more fun (bards and thiefs are my prefs - the bleeding monk is waaay too easy to play, if you get past the first few levels).
Of the new kits... i think the most interesting is the Kensai and the sorcerer. I would give a vote to tha paladin kits but the strongest (a real beast) is a berserker. Try a half-orc with 19-18-19, dual wield a couple of kick-ass swords and you are going through the game like a knife through butter

I play as a Skald and I can really recommend this kit! When you get up to level 20 (which won't take so long for a bard) your bard songs gives almost insane combat bonuses Image

i wouldnt reccomend the blade, he sounds good but i tried it and he is a bit too much of a jack of all trades, the main problem i have with blades is that they have half the lore value of the other bards and the high lore is the main attraction of a bard.

they may be good at fighting but they are weak compared to warriors (rangers, barbarians, paladins etc). the skald sounds good i i would reccomend that kit if you want to be a bard

I'd want to play as a bard once if only to do the play sub-quest; that sounds fun. But a skald is the one you guys would recommend versus a blade? How about playing a pure bard?

the only disadvantage a skald has over a bard is a much weaker pickpocket ability, the skald makes up 4 it with better combat skills, (+1 to hit and damage,)and their bard song gives big combat bonuses later on.

its up to you really, if u want to pick pocket take a bard, if u want to be better at combat choose a skald. personally i would choose the skald anyday

I am playing a Blade - going on to Chapter 4 now. I am level 15 and have yet to find an item I can not identify, which means no learning identifies and that is usefull. He is also not bad in a fight wielding 2 longswords. and he has some nice spells to back him up.

On the downside his bardsong is not great and he only gets up to level 6 spells.

The rest of my party is Minsc, Jaheira, Keldorn, Nalia, Jan

The Blades bardsong doesn't increase with level like the other bard kits. It remains level 1.
