Backstab, What is the secret?

My main character is a fighter/thief currently at about 60% stealth. She can hide in the shadows and sneak behind someone, but as soon as I select attack, she leaves the shadows and no backstab. Apparently I am doing something wrong, but so far haven't discovered what that may be.

You may want to boost your stealth up some. Also, your thief may become visible if he/she moves into a well lit area and backstab isn't always successful
I remember a couple of times my pc fighter/thief tried (unsuccessfully) to backstab some fairly powerful baddies and had to run back to his posse for backup.

You can only backstab with thief weapons, like quarterstaff, longsword, katana, shortsword, dagger, club ...
Some monsters (like golems) are immune to backstabbing.

It improves your chances considerably if you are very close to the target, i.e. circles overlapping. You can also backstab with fists. That's how I killed Saverok once!

Ok,I had also tried backstabbing with stealth up around 80-85% (w/stealth boots), but from what I see here, I was too far away when I chose attack. Her weapon is a short sword+2 so the weapon part is ok. Str is 18/97 and dex 18 so it ought to be a devastating attack if (when
) it actually happens. At least wearing speed boots she can beat feet back to the group if it fails

Based upon what you have just stated, you must not be close enough when choosing to attack. So long as you are right behind the enemy then you should be good.
Your attack should indeed be very devastating with those stats, especially once you get to the higher levels and have a higher backstab multiplier. Throw in a critical hit and a strength potion and watch the chunks fly on even the baddest of enemies.

I successfully backstabbed those poop golems in Chateau Irenicus once when I tried out a fighter-thief in BG2...killed them each with one hit. I haven't tried any other golem since then so it may have been a bug. I know in pnp you can't back stab golems, slimes, oozes...crap like that.
It took me a while to master backstabbing...just keep playing with it.
Anyone here ever gotten a critical hit on a backstab? WOW!

In BGI (not TUTU) you have to move your character directly behind the intended target and then select attack while hiding of course. In TUTU and BGII the engine is much more liberal and will usually let you backstab from the side. But in BGI your placement must be exactly behind the target no exceptions.

I just got one in my new game of BG1 (Tutu). Montaron is a level 2 assassin with a standard short sword and on a critical hit backstab did 27 damage.

You can backstab all the above in TOSC. That's how I usually kill the golems where you get the tome for extra constitution, and the slimes here there and everywhere.
