How do I...pick locks?

Okey, this might sound extremely noobish, but I can't seem to figure how to pick locks. Actually, I would also prefer if Virgil did the picking instead as he is more skilled in it than my main character. Anyone here able to help?

Heh, that was bugging me for a while until i figured it out.
You need to have a set of lockpicks. You can buy them in some shops, but if you don't want to spend money on them, you can always find them in Tarant in the trash can next to the inn (the lousy one) in the warehouse district.
As for the second question, I think you have to give the lockpicks to Virgil and have "follower skills" enabled, but unfortunately, I never figured out how to make him pick a lock that way.

As Mr Pastorius says but to help when you click on your lockpicks drag them across to the "use" box on the right hand side of your inventory screen.
Virgil will automatically attempt any lockpicking if he has a higher % chance of success than you. However 1 point of lockpicking skill plus seeing the blacksmith in shrouded hills to become an apprentice will put you above him.

If you have the lockpicks, Virgil doesn't need a second set.

Is it just me or is the whole lock picking system messed up? seriously, two points in lock picking, a dexterity of 9, and apprentice plus an auto skeleton key and I still couldn't do crap...
Unlocking cantrip too, until my wp was 12...

It depends on the lock difficulty. Some locks are easily unlocked with one or two points in lockpicking and apprentice training, while others will give you headaches even as a master. I'm not sure why Unlocking Cantrip gives you issues, since I rarely had any problems with it.

Some locks can't be opened with unlocking Cantrip at all.
Like certain locks in certain sewers under a certain big town that lies over a certain big river.

Does unlocking cantrip get better with higher willpower? Seriously, I can't get into the bates engine factory. It is driving me nuts. My lockpicking skill isn't that high because I planned to use pickpocketing and the unlocking cantrip. I would pickpocket the key off Cedric Applebe but I'm, trying to go evil (I have no idea how to do the quests in a way that doesn't give you good rep) and I assume blowing up the engine is part of it.
Update: Finally pick-pocketed the key, destroyed the engine. Too bad applebey or whatever his name is doesn't give me a dialog option regarding the newly destroyed prototype. I consider uninstalling in disgust.

Well your dexterity is pretty low, which is a factor when picking locks, 2 levels of lockpicking isn't going to get you far either. Try raising your dex to 12, lockpicking another level and becoming an expert. As to the magic option, the level of your magic/technical affinity is the critical factor, the more magical you are the more effective your spells are. Have you got greater than 25 points above the 'balance' line?

You can, but you need a very high magical aptitude.

Lockpicking is one of those skills that just doesn't really start working until one has many points invested in it. The same could be said for steal and a few other skills.

As much as i enjoy this game, lockpicking is one of the many things that they screwed up and it is true that unlocking cantrip doesnt unlock everything and no it doesnt get better with a higher willpower.
