Is Coran good enough to be your party's only thief?

I'm considering keeping Imoen until I can find Coran, and replacing him with her.

Is he good enough? Can you get him at a low enough level so that he'll be able to handle the traps in Durlag's Tower later on?

This is considering a Tutu game.

TIA

Yes I would be interested in this too, since I've only used Jan is my only thief on all the numerous times i've played through the series. Will be keeing up with this thread. :)

I don't know what effect Tutu has on Coran's thieving skills or whether you're limited by the old BG1 experience cap, so I can't give you a lot of specific information. But personally, I don't think that one Thief has enough thieving skill points to handle all of your thieving needs in BG1.

Many of the traps in Durlag's Tower require a Find Traps skill over 90 to find and disarm. In the original BG1 game, I think Coran starts with 20. You can try usiing Potions of Perception and other means to temporarily increase his skill, but they are pretty rare so you might be in for a lot of frustration. In the last chapter of the game, there are a few traps that require a Find Traps skill over 100. If you don't mind running into a few like that, you might not need to worry about it.

Many of the locks in Durlag's Tower require an Open Locks skill over 90. In the original BG1 game, I think Coran starts with 80 (or maybe it's 60). Open Locks is somewhat less important than Find Traps if you have a Mage in your party who can cast Knock. (Your Clerics and Druids can cast the spell Find Traps, but they can't disarm traps unless a trap can be disarmed by a summoned monster.)

I usually give Imoen 90-100 points in Find Traps and the rest in Stealth and then give Coran 100 points in Open Locks and the rest in Stealth. But with Tutu installed, I guess you can set traps, so you might have to make a decision about that.

Good luck!

I'm probably stating the obvious :) but the longer you wait - and do other quests - before starting Durlags Tower, the more thieving skills your thief (whoever he/she is) will have.
Coran is nice enough npc, but for Durlag I'd probably stick with a singleclass thief.

It depends who your protagonist is. Ie if he is say a monk and can search for traps or is a tank that can take the trap damage if it's not found or a sorcerer who can unlock tough chests.

Overoll, I pretty much never use Imoen and Coran is my thief of choice, even if I have to use a potion of thievery etc on him from time to time, his overoll performance and personality is well worth the substitute. Not to mention I romance the guy :)

I usually go VonDondu's route and get Imoen up to 100 in traps before dualling her. Then Pick up Coran and us him to open locks and backstab. I Got him once on level 3/4 thats the lowest. I filled up my party from the get go only did the main quests and then dumped NPC's as I got the ones I really wanted.

I definatelly think you would be OK with just Coran as long as you willing to use potions.
