OK. I am a level 5 Ranger/Level 15 Sorcerer and have completed the Vale steps. Now I walk through the final door into the chamber and find Neeshka there, ready to betray me... this is when it gets bad. Qara leaves. Bishop is already on the other side. A Balor appears and sometimes wipes my whole party out with one spell. Garius and shadow constructs are there. I've gone through the scenario many, many, many times and I can't seem to get the upper hand on my enemies. I can get some, but not all before my party is all eliminated. I don't know what to do to destroy the pillars but I assume I have to. Every time I try, it knocks me down. I can't approach the baddies on the other side of the shield, because as soon as I do, a barrier is thrown up cutting me off from my friends, who are always a little slow behind me. They get cut to pieces by shadows and wraiths and I have to fight Garius, shadow constructs, Bishop, Qara and Neeshka all on my own... Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks!!

This was an odd fight for me. My character was a fighter / rogue, and I remember her and my other melee characters getting cut down, but then my ranged characters managed to finish the fight on their own.
If you're a caster, and you still have Sand and Ammon and Zhjaeve and Elanee, you should have enough firepower to kill Qara at least in the first round, with spells to spare. I don't remember a balor, but it might be a summoned demon, and so maybe you can get rid of it with dismissal.
I'd try to take out the ex-companions first and then focus on Garius. The pillars won't come into play until later. Ammon will tell you when you need to do something with them.

Hi, I did this first stage without much problems but thats mainly because i was a fighter type with high AC. What i did when the Demon got summoned was pull all my other characters out, along the sides / shields / entrance door, and have my main character tank the demon, what tends to kill the party is the fire he does pretty fast at the start. If you get someone with high health to take that you should be ok to kill him (Khelghar should posible be able to tank him with the full ironfist gear AC of 35-40 would give you a huge advantage for this fight).
If somehow they manage to drop your party low in health just activate the soothing light skill you get with the ritual of purification to give them regeneration. SPOILER (mark the text)
(watch the stones carefully you can recharge your special ritual skills with them)
SPOILER END
About the energy shields, you can attack them (khelghar did that job really good for me). Quara is easy just get Khelgar to kill her i had him rip her up because of the attacks of opportunity (I had 10 levels RDD on my own character so her fire spells didn't do me much  )
Dont worry to much about your party members dieing they will get up after you killed the group.
PS. if you didn't use the wand of resurection that you get at your keep you might want to use now
