Ok, my apologies if it really is a newbie question, but I have heard rumours of being able to get the weapons belonging to the god/goddess your character worships..?

All I know is that it has something to do with the class of character you choose..

Unfortunately, that is all I can say, so hopefully someone can help me!

I suspect the following is what you may be thinking of:

If you play a cleric with the war domain, you will be proficient and granted focus in your deity's favored weapon. If it doesn't happen automatically in the standard game out of the box, then there are mods where your starting equipment will include a version of the weapon in question. So, if you're a cleric of Hextor and take the war domain you'll start with a flail, for instance. It's just a normal version of the weapon. Just makes sense that you'd start with one because it's the weapon of your deity and you have focus in it.
