Uses for the super jump

Post by ellipsis jones »

On my last play-through, I use the config file edit to give myself a super jump. I was surprised at how much it added to the game. I was also playing a clan with celerity for the first time, so between the extra speed and the jump boost, I finally felt like I could do all those cool vampire feats that Jack warns you not to do - outrunning trains and so forth.

Aside from that, there were a lot of gameplay options that opened up. Here are a few (spoilers ahoy):

Heavy Metal Industries (the hollywood schrecknet hub): I was able to take an entirely new route through the warehouse, climbing on the stock shelves. It still involved stealth, as there are only a few places where you can jump on something high enough to then jump on top of the shelves, and the guards patrol these places. It's also tricky to jump from one shelf to the next. Really freshened up an old quest.

Society of Leopold: after running up the cliff path to the area overlooking the monastery, I was easily able to jump on top of the monastery roof. Rather than shooting the roof guards and clobbering the ones on the ground, you can do the reverse: clobber the roof guards and take over their gun nests.

Ming Xiao, the Cafeteria in the Venture Tower, and several other fights: the super jump and celerity let me dodge vertically as well as laterally. It was especially fun to soar over Ming's sprawling slug body and the SWAT team, shooting them in slow motion from above.

There are also a lot of places where you can get a nice view by hopping over obstacles. For instance, on the walkway between the towers in Grout's mansion, you can hop up to get an unobstructed view of the city and hollywood hills. Likewise, just after the tram ride in griffith park, you can jump over the turnstile and head back out onto the catwalk overlooking the city. I think this is the most spectacular view in the game.

So, has anyone found any other uses for the improved jump? I probably missed a lot, since I was gradually increasing my jump over the course of the game. For instance, I could see using it in the Chang brothers fight to jump up to the walkway rather than taking the stairs, but when I got to the Giovanni mansion I was only at sv_jump_boost "75" or thereabouts, and it was a bit too high for me to reach. I was still using the default jump in the Santa Monica sabbat warehouse.

For those who haven't tried super jumps yet, you can modify your config file like so:

sv_jump_boost "100.0"
sv_jump_maxspeed "350.0"
sv_jump_boost_immediate "1"

I haven't tried it yet, but it looks great. Especially this one, which is fantastic:

Also, the Ghost Haunts...

...at midnite quest is far quicker. Instead of doing the up the stairs/break 'em, find boiler room key get scalded etc. you can just jump up to the second floor. Removes some of the spook factor for them who hate this level.
I'm wondering if short of adding celerity as a cheat there is any way to improve running speed?

Not sure, but do these add speed?
Default are:
cl_upspeed "320"
cl_forwardspeed "500"
cl_backspeed "500"

I was wondering about those as well. Except mine are like so:

cl_upspeed "320"
cl_forwardspeed "400"
cl_backspeed "400"

I didn't change those values. Maybe that's something the unofficial patch modifies? I don't have the game installed at the moment, so I can't experiment.
