Will this new CPU run better than my AMD Athlon XP 3000+ @2.17Ghz? Well im guessing it would, but would it be compatible with my motherboard and all the hardware on it now? My motherboard model is AU31. If u need anymore info. and i will get it for u.

You and I have the same CPU. Manufacturers usually keep lists of compatible motherboards/CPU's online, so it shouldn't be hard to find out if you can safely upgrade your computer. Another thing you might want to investigate is your computer's memory. It has to be in sync with the Front Side Bus of your processor, or your computer will become slower due to data queueing between your FSB and your memory.

It is better than your processor. Anything that says Core 2 Duo, or Dual Processor is better than the Athlon XP 3000+ CPU.

Though you'll need to get a new motherboard and you really don't need to spend that much on a processor. I would recommend you spend like 150 - 170 on a processor and the remainder on an appropriate motherboard.

Each processor has a certain number of pins, common AMD processors have 939, so look for a motherboard with a 939 processor socket, and do make sure it also says ATX somewhere on the product title.

OK what does the ATX have to do with it? And another thing.. how do u tell if ur processor is AGP or PCI compatible with a videocard?

ATX is just a common form of motherboard, basically if it doesn't say ATX, it's probably more expensive or so outdated that it's useless.

PCI and AGP have nothing to do with a processor. That's a video card, meaning it hook sto the motherboard, thus you want to have a PCI or AGP slot on your motherboard for compatibility, not your processor.

See where it says AGP 8X? Those white slots with one big and one small are AGP. they are always white and the only video card slot that is white.

Well, dunno what else to do, but just look out for a white (Note not shaded sort of yellow, pure white) slot with one long slot and one short slot.

AFAIK PCI-E was invented after the Athlon64 got in use, so you highly probably have an AGP motherboard and video card. If you want to upgrade to the CPU you mentioned (which btw has an AM2 socket, not a 939) and keep your old video card, you will need to get an AM2 motherboard with an AGP slot. However, they seem to be very rare, and your old video card and RAM would probably bottleneck the CPU, so you'd practically be wasting money. If I were you I'd try to save up and buy a whole new combination of motherboard, CPU, RAM and video card at once. That way it's way easier to make sure it will work with each other and be balanced out correctly.
