Problem with the Console

So, being the filthy cheat that I am, I want to use the console and put some cheats on.

I put "C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire - Bloodlines\vampire.exe" - console into the 'run' dialogue, the game starts up with the console there.
For some reason, while the console's up, the menu options don't come up, so I minimise it and go to Load Game.
The problem is, I can't seem to get the console to come up again. I've tried pressing ~, tried ^, and various other symbols just in case, and got nothing.

Could this be due to missing patches? I'm not actually 100% sure which patches I have, since my boyfriend lent me a CD with a load of patches on, but this was back in October, so I'll obviously be missing the most recent (and maybe some other ones, I'm not sure how up-to-date he was.)
Yeesh, I sound clueless.

Any help would be greatly appreciated <3

As far as I know - which is admittedly fairly little - the best way to handle the console is to open it and close it with the ~ key while in the menu (so first you have to press ESC). That's the only way I try handle the console and it hasn't given me any grief as long as I handle it that way.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't seem to work either.
It closes the console fine, but I can't get it to come back up again.

I'll try patching and then I'll try again, I guess.

Edit- the official patch didn't change a thing ]:

No, no, no!

When you start the game, it comes up over the menu. Don't minimise it. Close it. The reason why the ~ key isn't working is because the dialog is already open - just minimized. However, it's minimized behind the game, which has trapped all input paths, so it just sits there on your taskbar - inaccessible. Close it the first time, and everything should be fine.

Thanks, but I got it working now. For some reason I can close it with ~, but I have to open it with a different key altogether (which can also close it).

Someone may as well lock this, since the problem's solved.
