It depends on the character build. I don't want to spoil your game so I won't say what you fight etc. I usually wait untill level 3 and try to have some idea how my char is going to handle combat situations.

I'm usually level 5 before doing the first quest you get from Caius, in fact I've usually completed the second quest before taking on the first. If you're character is a Dark Elf you shouldn't have too many problems at level 3.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Spoiler
The first time I tried this quest was with a low level non Dark Elf, and the guy on the other side of the bridge you have to cross to reach the Dwemer ruin, blew me away (even after reloads) with fireballs. It never happened again, I was always ready for him after that. ;)

I'm a redgauard mage with good stats.

my highest stats is strength and endurance.

all major skills are in the upper 30 to low 40.

all Minor skills are between 20-24.

All other stats is I'm not sure there useful or not.I have Iron sparksword equipped.

this is a bit off track... but on my third character (a nord warrior) I listened to Caius when he said to go off and join a few guilds and explore a bit... well much later I am ready to do his first quest... and I am the Arch Mage, the Master of the Fighters Guild, the Master Thief, GrandMaster of the Morag Tong, the Imperial Dragon, Primate of the Imperial Cult, and Leader of House Haalu, in fact the only main groups I don't lead are the Blades (I haven't done any quests) and the Temple (doesn't make sense)

You want to be careful about joining too many different factions, because some of the quests you get from one guild may interfere with a quest in another guild. For example, a Fighter's Guild quest requires you to kill a member of the Thieve's Guild. Completing that quest would expel you from the Thieve's Guild, but advance you in the Fighter's. I suggest only joining factions that would be a benefit to you, so if you're a fighter, join the Fighter's Guild. Or at least limit your factions. The Fighter's Guild and the Mage's Guild don't seem to really coincide with each other that much, so if you wanted to join both it would probably be alright.

i would say Lv 8-10 makes it easy but it's still doable on 5 or so.

plus read the walkthrough it shows how you can do all the quests with no overlap so you can complete them all.

Many people, including myself, find that using a walkthrough the first time through a game spoils a lot of the enjoyment of figuring things out and can spoil the storyline together with any surprises etc. Using a walkthrough is therefore not an option to everyone :)

I have done that quest as low as level 2, and as high as around level 20.
A few things that might be helpful..
*Your race as a Breton will certainly not hurt
*I suggest completing the low level mage guild quests beforehand, to be specific it would help to finish those you get from Ajira because: (highlight)
Spoiler
she will provide you with some extremely helpful potions for that encounter upon the bridge
;)
*make sure you have a decent number of at least standard level healing potions
*if you have some skill in Sneak and Marksman, that can be useful

I was refering to how to complete both the thieves and fighters guild.

The main quest should be take as it comes.
