When do I know it's okay to drop stuff?

I've got some books and keys in my inventory that I know I've used before, but can't be placed in containers.
Are these things okay to drop, or do they have uses late in the game?

Other than the immediate use in the area where you are, it is most unlikely you would find a place for them. However you can use a place easy for you to remember, to store them, like phaen's house while you are in Targos area, Wandering Village while you are in Fell Wood area and somewhere in Kuldahar while you are in that area.
Books however, unless they are magical have no use whatsoever, so sell them.
