Difference in character levels/Backstab

Just asking if this is normal:

Thief - Lvl 21 ( Halfling )
Ranger - Lvl 16 ( Half Elf )
Fighter - Lvl 18 ( Dwarf )
Cleric/Fighter - Lvl 13/13 ( Dwarf )
Druid/Fighter - Lvl 13/13 ( Half Elf )
Mage/Fighter - 13/12 ( Half Elf )

I'm not so much worried by the dual classed characters' levels, but the pure classes' levels. I always thought that XP was granted more or less evenly to all characters? Why is my Thief already at level 21 with 84 hp, while my Ranger is at level 16 with 112 hp?

Another thing that's bugging me is that Backstab doesn't seem to work. My Thief's Move Silently feat is at 175%, can't go any higher when he's leveling up, and he's non-detectable thanks to several shadow items, but no matter what I do, I can't get him to backstab anyone. It doesn't matter if I use the appropriate script or not - I mean, I've sneaked my way right behind an enemy, inched all the way up to their location circle, but the option never appears. I've tried it with different weapons, I tried invisibility potions... is there a trick that I'm not getting?

Certain classes, such as thieves, need less xp to advance to the next level while some other classes need more than average xp to advance to the next level. Its normal for characters to vary in level like this. I think its because a level 16 ranger for example is more powerful overall than a level 16 thief so it just kind of levels things out a bit :)

To backstab, just walk behind the enemy while invisible or hiding etc. and just attack normally. There is no special thing to click on to backstab, it will do it automatically when you attack.

Yes, this is not 3E the characters level up evenly. Look at the character file it should show you when is the next level. Also READ THE MANUAL. You have the table with experience in there.
For backstabing first of all you must uncheck in the configuration the 3E rules and always remember to hide in shadows, sneak and attack with a weapon that can be used to backstab, mainly a piercing one handed melee weapon like dagger or short sword.

Any melee weapon your thief can use he can also use for backstabbing.

The character levelling appears to be in order. If you want to check out the experience tables, search disc 1 for "manual". XP is granted almost evenly among characters (with the remainder from amounts not divisible by your number of characters distributed to the leading characters, so the last character will generally have slightly less XP). As for the HP difference, different types of classes (warrior, priest, rogue, wizard) are awarded different HP amounts upon level-up as a function of their class.

If you turn on the combat feedback option, it should tell you whether or not you are using backstab successfully.
