Spell Trap

After *A LOT* of reloading, I finally got the Staff of the Magi :D
Does the spell trap ability absorb healing spells and defensive/buff spells on the wielder?
If so, can this be bypassed by unequipping it prior to buffs/heals, and if so (lot of "ifs", but bear with me...) does re-equipping it drain the spell trap for the next 24 hours, or does it continue to absorb them?

Oh - and does Melf's MMs cancel the resistances conferred by the staff?

I discovered the answers to most of my questions:
Defensive/buff/healing spells cast by the wielder work as normal, but if cast by other members of the party, they are absorbed by the trap.
Unequipping the staff does not remove the spell trap.
MMM unequips the staff, which removes the resistances/invisibility, but the spell trap remains in place if activated.
