I have just "upgraded" [HA!-not] to a new computer with Windows Vista. I moved my game and all of my saved games over to the new computer. It was great.... better graphics, great sound...began killing stuff and WHAM! An ugly box appears with a bunch of garbage characters and my game freezes up....goes completely black. If I try to load the game, it will load until I select my saved game, then it tries to load the saved game and gives me the same problem. Is anyone else running Windows Vista and have you run into a problem like this? Any suggestions from anyone would sure be appreciated. I have beaten this game once and really enjoy playing it. Would sure hate to trash it now thanks to good ol' Bill.

Thanks loads. :(

Try starting a new game. See if you have the same problem.

New Game - Same Problem

Not only did I start a new game, I completely uninstalled the game and did a whole new install from scratch. However, this time I made note of the garbage...it's actually the following sort of error:

TerrQuad_ReadTerrObjFileInfo:: INVALID SLOT #0

If there is anyone out there who knows what this means and what I can do I really will appreciate your help. The game lets me create a character, it goes through the whole introduction, and then when it starts to load my character, I get this across the top of my screen and the rest of the screen is black.

Thanks all!

Just switched to Vista

I also bought a new pc, switched my game and saved game and got the same error message neatly outlined in a green box at the top of my screen.

I did the same uninstall, fresh install, and new game and was rewarded with a green box and same error message.

There has to be a way to run DL on vista.

I have the same problem

I have the same problem. Although when i played The Sims I played under Administrater (right click, compadability, play as administrator) and that seems to work even on DL. But, the last time i played it didnt come up as administator and when I try to play It comes up with the last place I saved.. then the little green box appears. Then if i go back and try to play as administator it starts at a place that i saved a wile ago. WTF? DO i have to start at that place again? SOMEONE HELP!

Try DLing a DirectX update from Microsoft. I had a similar problem with 3 different games that wouldn't run on MS Vista until I read somewhere on the Web that there was a DirectX problem that could be remedied by going to Microsoft and letting MS install a backward compatible patch to DirectX onto your 'puter. Of course you have to have a valid (Legal) version of MS Vista.

Fixed it!

I figured out a way to get it to work on Vista!!!

Right click the Dungeon Lords Icon. Properties, Compadibility, will the have a box that says Run This Program in compadibility for (X that box and go to Windows XP) Then on the bottom of that same window check the box that says Run this Program as Administrator.

Thats what worked for me and I have the new Dell XPS Notebook with Vista. Hopefully it will work for you too!

I had the same problem just run the program as administrator, you'll have to start the game again but you'll never have that problem again

One of the problems with running DL on Vista is it dousn't save the game correctly, it only puts the save is the slot but it fails to save all the info for the file. In essence your not really saving the game only a Save Ghost.
This happens becasue of the enhanced securirty on Vista I think.
To fix that you need to right click the shortcut to the game select properties go to the compatibility tab and click the box at the bottom to have it run as a administrater program, this gives DL permissions to alter files on your Computer so you can save over previous files and save all the info needed, doing this also rolls it back to the latest uncorrupted save file you have.
Also to make it run smoother set it in compatibility mode for windows 2000 (On the same tab as the above).
After doing these when you try to launch the game it will ask for your permission for the program to start since it will be able to alter files on the computer it needs to work correctly.
I have my windows Vista Notebook set to the above settings and it runs smoother and is less buggy then on my windows XP Desktop.

Another thing, it will lock up with those random numbers displayed at the top if you manage to climb a cliff and fall off the map. ^^

Change Compatability from Vista to 2000

The various replies are all interesting, and some are bordering on sarcastic. I believe I was one of the first members to post this particular problem, if not "THE" first. It's only been recently that I've had the time to play DL again and try to address this problem.

I had gone to the Dreamcatcher site forum recently and there was a similar solution in there to many of the suggestions here and in my original post. The solution also follows the logic of what Operating Sytem this game was designed for.

Open Explorer
Navigate to the Dungeon Lords folder (Program Files/Dreamcatcher/Dungeon Lords)
Right click on the dlords.exe file
Click properties
Click the Compatability Tab
Change compatability to Windows 2000
Also click on the box "Run as Administrator" in the lower part of the window
Click OK
Then close all open windows

Changing compatability to Windows XP did not work for me on my new Dell Laptop with Windows Vista. AND, I didn't have to change my parental controls settings then re-boot the computer. Changing it to Windows 2000 and running as Administrator has worked well for me for the past several days that I have played it. I have run into only one minor glitch, which may have occurred anyway. And it may clear itself up when I restart the game. I'll find out later.

Hope this helps "ALL" who are having this problem. I can only speak from my experience

I've tried all of your suggestions. My computer makes it look promising (it goes to the black screen and tries to format itself correctly) and them I'm back to where I started... :( does anyone else have any suggestions? (Btw, I don't have a Dell. I have a Toshiba)

That's strange, what video card do you have ? must be a driver issue.
Like I posted in another tread, the game works fine for me now (CE), with the new nvidia drives (175.19), I'm running Vista x64 SP1 with a Geforce 8800GT.

Lol I got that problem fixed along time ago

For the saving and loading thing to work in vista, you need to go over to your dungeon lord folder in your hard drive, click on folder option and on the permission thing, change it to all access from every single one. and click apply to all folder, and wait for a bit, and it should work. Good luck

where are the .sav files in vista

hey everyone..

Finally got around the slot # 0 error by changing the compatibility. Now when I use the editor for the game00.sav file...make my changes and save the char. when I go back and start the game nothing I did in the editor is there. I found a ROSTER.sav file in the dir and saved it as .old. Copied the game00.sav file from c:...../save/ and renamed it to ROSTER.sav still the same thing. When I do a search on Game00.sav the one in c:.../save/ is the only .sav that shows up. Where is the .sav files from the game going now that I changed the compatibility?

TIA

Al

editing with editor..

i think its safe to assume that you already did the compatible to "previous versions of windows" and "run as administrator". Now to edit your files, you need to..

1. right click on your dungeon lord icon and click "open file location".

2. go to "save" folder and copy the desired file you want to edit.

3. click on the "COMPATIBILITY FILES" just below the "File Edit View Tools Help" ( i think thats the toolbar) row... Its not hard to miss, it has a folder icon next to it.

4. open your editor and edit the file. the file should be available for editing.

5.after editing, copy the edited file FROM the "COMPATIBILITY FILES" folder, click BACK, delete the unedited version of your file there, and paste.

hope that helps..
