In-Game (non-mod) Places of Residence (potential minor spoilers)

Every so often we get questions here from players enquiring about places to live, and a lot of people (myself included

) end up gushing about all of the great house mods out there...only to discover that the person asking is actually on XBox.
This being the case, I decided to begin a thread listing in-game houses that are good to use. I am sure I've seen people discussing the subject in another thread some time back, but I searched back 9 pages and couldn't find it. If anyone knows where it is perhaps it could be added here?
To begin I'll mention a few places I know of, some involve quests but I won't actually mention them here so as to avoid spoilers as much as possible. You can, of course, just kill the occupants of any place that strikes your fancy, but I don't usually attack NPCs unless provoked. So, anything I mention here (with one notable quasi-exception) is either non-violent or there is an actual quest in which the owner is "removed." :
Seyda Neen
*Vodunius Nuccius' cottage
*Foryn Gilnith’s Shack
Balmora
*Dura gra-Bol's House
*Ralen Hlaalu's Manor
Ascadian Isles
*Dren Plantation (only a good idea at higher levels

)
Also a good bet are miscellaneous Velothi towers; they tend to be occupied by Telvanni mages who will usually (unless you are a member of House Telvanni) attack you on sight, thus conveniently "vacating" the premises. The drawback, of course, is that the old Velothi towers are rather remote.

Isn't there a place in Ald-ruhn that becomes "vacant" also.

There is an apartment in St. Olms/Delyn that becomes vacant after a theives guild quest...

I suggest Camping out in a mages guild as they are large and easily acessible.
Other places to stay include various store rooms in corner clubs that are empty except for the barrels etc.
there also a nice empty cave place under ST delwyn...
At the moment i've got all my stuff in the arena storage area as it's easy to get to and has almost enough storage space......

I like using the Ihinipalit Shrine in the St Delyn Underworks in Vivec myself. You need to be of a decent level to clear it out first of course.
Prior to that I use the Balmora Mages Guild.The I clear the junk off the two tables by Sharn gra-Muzgob and lay my ingredients out on one and stash my Alchemy apperatus on the other. The other tables I use for storing other sundry items. It starts to look like my bedroom after a while!

Another possible house I figured out last night... It relates to a somewhat more hidden quest and is essentially what you might call "a player-initiated option".. an "additional conclusion" you might say.
*Vorar Helas' house in Balmora... Highlight below for a spoiler.
If you go to the basement of Fat Leg's Drop Off in Hla Oad you'll find a bunch of Camona Tong and one of them wants you to deliver a slave, Rabinna, to Vorar Helas. Accept the quest, and then talk to Rabinna, you may need to get her disposition up, I'm not sure. She'll tell you that Helas will slit open her belly upon arrival because she is actually a drug mule and there are narcotics concealed inside her. She asks you to deliver her to the Ebonheart Argonian mission instead... do so.
After concluding that quest I felt it was time to "deliver" a nasty little surprise to Vorar Helas... in the form of my blade. My characters don't kill wantonly, but this little act didn't exactly weigh on my conscience.
(end spoiler)

i've always used hlaalu manor myself, but here's a few places that could be used.
Seyda Neen, lighthouse
Vivec, the walkways (it's fun to leave stuff lying all the way around a canton

)(even more fun when it's the armor and things of dead ordinators

)
Balmora, strange-named-orc's tower
i have to go now, but i'll edit in more things later

Unless you are hlaalu clearing out most of the unimportan dudes in the caldera castle will have no importance and it's a pretty good house.
Neat trick name your dude so they have the same name as your stronghold. Petty but fun

@Wing and Ampasand,
just so you know, part of the idea behind this thread is on how to acquire houses by largely *avoiding* the use of excessive or wanton violence.
Houses that "become vacant" as a result of quests or if the inhabitants attack you without being provoked are another matter entirely.

It's not murder, it's defending my own house. those people are trespassing in my house and im merely defending the place. i called the tower, but the orc took it! am i just supposed to sit there and take that?
another place is that cave next to seyda neen. it's a nice storage area if you really like caves. same with the cave under fat leg's dropoff in hla oad. there's even a hidden storage area in that one.

I do believe that my little dark elf assasin is going to have to take a little trip to Balmora.

She's going to put her Morag Tong training to a little use.
She just finished taking a certain person to safety.
Good timing with this post.

Arkngthand, if you want plenty of space, not too difficult to get to with Divine Intervention.

Along the same idea as Arkngthand, the ancient stronghold of Hlormaren works very well too. Plenty of space and equidistant between Hla Oad and Gnaar Mok. Plus, Almsivi Intervention will take you to Balmora, or you can just hike/levitate over the mountains and run to town.
Or, at the other end of the spectrum there is a small abandoned shack near Gnaar Mok, which is quite good for a beginning level character.
