At the Altar of Enchanting in the Arcane UNiversity it doesnt give me an option to enchant my weapons. It only lets me enchant my clothing and shields(i.e. helmet, cuirass, boots, shield etc.) help appreciated!

I wouldn't worry about it. I ant a mage guild member since i dont even know anyone whose character is even a main mage. But Just get a trasnegie stone from the plane of oblivion. And I dont even think you can.

In order to enchant a weapon you need a filled soul gem. the higher the soul the better. you can put one enchantment per soul gem, if i remember well, i'm not sure. also, you have to put all enchantments once. you cannot enchant a weapon or item that already has an enchantment on it. maybe this is your problem. also, you should be at least journeyman in armorer, in order to be able to repair your magic weapons or armor. otherwise you'll need to go to the smith an the repair price is not cheap. also, another problem with enchanted weapons is that you need to recharge them. you need to soul trap, azura's star might come in handy at this point. recharging them at a mage also is very expensive.

i know i have all of that. I have filled soul gems but it just doesnt give me an option to enchant a WEAPON. i can enchant armour just not weapons. and i was wondering why i couldnt enchant them.

wait i thought that transgi stones did that not soulgems if not what do soul gems do "I know this was probably answered but I looked several times"

Very odd. Armor, weapons, etc, enchant alike. What exactly happens when you try to select a weapon to enchant? And what weapons have you tried to enchant?

It doesnt give me an option to enchant weapons. Ill go up to the altar, and ill go into the items i wish to be enchanted, and none of my weapons are listed. just my armour,amulets, rings etc.

hm. odd indeed. never had this problem. as i said be, sure that the weapon you want to enchant is not already enchanted or a quest item. anyway, you can find more information here Oblivion:Enchanting - UESPWiki

I have some enchanted but also some that are plain old shortswords. IT wont let me do it.
