Popular Culture in Fallout 3

There was a lot of that in the older games, remember? Movie references mostly, A Boy and His Dog, Mad Max, Terminator, you name it. If you don't understand why some people will stick to the leather jacket through the entire game, now you do. ;)

So here we are 2007, close to ten years since the last Fallout. Do you feel there are new cult movies or other things that deserve a place in Fallout 3?

If there is anything I'd like to see, it's a bit of Equilibrium actually (the society of Equilibrium was also a post-apocalyptic), namely Gun-kata; something in the lines of a feat or perk that lets you use small arms to execute fast melee attacks. Or the movie Children of Men, and something like a mission where you have to escort a pregnant women to safety. You get the idea. :)

Got any good ones? Remember, we're talking about the past then years here. :p

Team America: World Police

Team America World Police Movie, Team America Movie - Official Site

Team America:World Police...okay, you get the message (see w/site above). This is a mission to bring democracy to everyone, whether they want it or not. Go sic 'em team. Would be brilliant in Fallout.
Now while we are on the subject, Tricky, how about Neil Stephenson's Cryptonomicon???? Very post-modern with lots of lovely little impossibilities (countries that don't exist, technologies in the making, references back to last world war...could be updated...cryptology, it's perfect!) :D . Not giving away my really big idea just yet, 'cos maybe I can sell it. Commerce Rules.

Hannibal Lecter, V for Vendetta, Prestige and to a less extent Matrix for movie references.

World of Warcraft, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil for game references.

Mad Max, yes, it will most likely be present in this installment, but there are a few that would look good as side missions. Red Dawn for one, and possibly Tank Girl. I wonder if they will put some random movie refernce in, like in FO2

Wow. Did you even see it? A city build on the remains of the world?

Six-String Samurai would be my choice. In fact, I'd like to see more samurai stuff in there in general, particularly the Kurasawa stuff that was getting released in the '40's and '50's, his most prolific period. They got the "Them!" reference spot-on here, but didn't do much more with the monster genre, which was a huge part of "futuristic" 50's culture, "The Creature From the Black Lagoon" is introduced and then abandoned in this game.

Plus the fact that the 1950's were completely shaped by WWII, and I found that post-WWII references to Japan, Germany and Russia to be sadly lacking. Instead we get all these references to China, which was an impoverished non-power at the end of the war and throughout much of the Cold War. If retro-futurism means that ideals and ideology should be conforming to the vision that science fiction writers and cultural forecasters had in the last 1950's, then we shouldn't have a future that looks anything like our own, which we clearly do in FO3 with the Chinese invasion of Alaska, as opposed to the Russians.

-6 String Samurai, Seven Samurai, Godzilla, noir films (I liked the radio play they had in FO3, that was pretty good), Dr Strangelove, Creature from the black lagoon, more monster flicks in general.

I agree with many of the ones posted so far, in particular Equilibrium and Six-String Samurai. I'd love to run into the Red Elvises, or Death, and it would be fun to be able to get some of their items as well. Top hat, anyone? Bow and arrows, that would be pretty fun, I think. Bowling shoes, guitar melee weapon... :D

Now for some of my own. X-Files would be pretty easy to fit in, and would go well. Terminator and Battlestar Galactica would also fit very well, just throw in a Cylon and a Terminator lookalike, for example. A Firefly reference would make me immensely happy, as would a Doctor Who one. Those are all TV shows, I don't watch as many movies, although I suppose it could be cool to have a Sweeney Todd like barber/killer. :D

Also, there is reference to Lovecraft's work, ina form of big ruined building SW part of the map. Can't remember the name of the building nor the name of the book (though I have vague memory that it had something to do with Necronomicon (sp?)), and I'm not in same town with my XBox. The building is full of Feral Ghouls and special Ghoul called as Glowing One (or similiar). Anyone able to give more details and confirm wether I'm right or wrong?

The Dunwich Building its called.
Think its a reference to a H. P. Lovecraft short story called The Dunwich Horror.

Necronomicon is a book mentioned in some of Lovecraft's stories including The Dunwich Horror.

Tranquility Lane seems like a reference to Pleasantville, a movie where two people get sucked into a tv show. Everyone there is super nice and cheery, but there's a sinister undercurrent to the whole thing, and everything's in black and white.

Also, "He calls himself Betty now." I think that's from Kung Pow: Enter the Fist!

Not sure if this is the place to put this, but one Easter Egg I noticed was in Paradise Falls. It is apparent that someone is a Tommy James and the Shondells fan, I can't think of any other reason for Crimson and Clover
