*SPOILER*

I'm having a huge problem, I started out the game, cleared the orc caves, finished the quest, proceeded to the second part of the prologue where the expedition got buried.

*END SPOILER*

I saved my game, one of my party members died shortly after, I tried to load my saved game and wtf? I was back in hrothgars house, I thought I loaded the wrong game by accident, so I tried again, same thing. I tried loading a different save game, took me back to hrothgars house again. I tried a couple times no matter where I save when I try to load the game it loads the same save. What is going on??

I'm running Icewind Dale 1.06 patched, no modifications or hacks or cracks or anything.

Did you install the expansions how and totl? Just noticed both can be optained from the download section from iwd part of this site (you probably need to install the patch again after that).
Also you could try saving a different slot and loading this one. Doubt it will work but it's worth a shot.

Also, you could try to locate the folders where the game saves, and try to manually remove those saves (or if you prefer, copy them to somewhere else). After this, try again.

Also, have you tried to reinstall the game?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.. I've tried reinstalling twice and removing save folder contents and it still won't save my game proper.. I'm beginning to wonder if this is just a Windows Vista issue

yes, it is a vista issue.
get another hard drive or partition your current one so you can put win95/98SE on it. if you like playing your older games, it'll be a worthwhile effort.
