Decent POP3/SMPT service

Yeah, I'm looking for one. Preferably one that's for free. =/

I'm done with webmail, gmail in particular. I've recently become aware just to what extend Google Advertising makes use of keywords in people emails. While I initially didn't mind it, I think it's now heading into the wrong direction. I'm bailing out now.

GMX was the only one I remember to be free of cost and rather good, but unfortunately no one outside of Germany can subscribe to them anymore. If only I had kept the account I had during college. Does anyone know of another good provider?

This thread might better go in SYM, but I figured we already have that quality freeware topic in here somewhere. This one isn't that different.

I'm not fully certain it is what you are looking for, but quite a few people I know report that Pine is pretty good.

Well.. I don't know what else to call it. An email service, but not a web based one. Is there another description for that than the one I used in the title?

Since I also need a new email client, this Pine may be of some use. I know I have Outlook, but I'd rather not use that.

Does your ISP not provide a POP3 email account?

Nope. It's part of a larger university campus WAN that everyone gets here. I never had to sign to an account or anything, it was pretty much plug and play.
