Crafting and alchemy

I have found a variety of items that indicate they can be crafted into various essences. Apparently putting them on the alchemy bench and using the mortar and pestle on them is not all that is required? Is there a crafting book out there I need to find first? Also, anyone have problems getting some recipes to work even though you have all the right ingredients and (apparently) right caster level/feats/skills? Maybe this crafting stuff isn't worth all the effort.....

Thanks!

To convert items into essences, you just need to use the mortar on them in your inventory. You only need workbenches when you're actually crafting items.

crafting

Some of the items you find or claim after combat .... like teeth, claws, hides, various undead dusts, demon blood etc. ... will have descriptors that say they are a crafting item and often what they will turn into. Some items are used for creating/improving armor or weapons; some items can be turned into essences that are part of the crafting recipes for weapons/armor/rings/amulets etc. You probably won't have enough ingredients or recipe books until you start doing the quests in Neverwinter. It's a good idea to find a flame/cold/electrical weapon to battle certain monsters .... or create one through crafting.
