Does the poison weapon ability applies to bows and other ranged weapon or only for melee weapons?

Yes, an assassin's poison ability applies to ranged weapons. Just don't use poisoned arrows of detonation around your party...unless you have a lot of antidotes handy.

Even read that Poison works with Melf's Meteors !!
Didn't yet try however...

I had heard that, too, over at the BGDungeon Tavern, but I never tested it.

Can you poison staves?

Of course!! When you get that uber-staff in ToB, you can do outrageous backstab damage with it - I've gotten 410 so far.

Strange: I thought that you can backstab only with bladed weapons. AND POISON STAFF!!!!!!

Thieves can backstab with any melee weapon available to their class. This excludes the Staff of the Magi.

imagine a assassin with the staff of magic. instead of a normal strike he will backstab every time he hits

A good thought, but unfortunatley it won't work, as a thief can only backstab with "thief-only" weapons. Since the Staff of the Magi is only for mages, you can't backstab with it, even though you may still use it with the "Use Any Item" ability.

Poisoned Arrows of detonation? Assassin just sounds better to me more every day....

Of course if you're a Fighter/Thief you can in fact backstab with a stave. I just started a new game with my character being an Elf Fighter/Thief that I imported from BG (Oddly enough his hitpoints doubled on import - started off with 163 - seriously considering using SK to drop his hits to the allowed max.) Anyway, I have been backstabbing just fine with my staff, and once you have 'Use any item' I don't see why you couldn't backstab with the SotM.

Fighter/Thief is a lot of fun. Backstab is an incredibly useful ability imho.

Where do you even get arrows of detonation in this game? Aren't there only a few?

I find them as random items in various locations. I've even found some right in Irenicus's dungeon in one game. My last game seemed to be virtually throwing them at me. My assassin had a field day.
