What's the best Favored Enemy for Rangers?

What type of creature will this ability be used a lot on? I'd prefer it being a slightly dangerous enemy also, so that the ability isn't wasted.

There are two good options... or maybe three, but if I ever played rangers, I would use one of these two.

First, trolls. Trolls are something that you see some of all the way through the game.

Second, goblins. Goblins don't come again after a certain point, but if you make it to that point, you don't need to have the extra BAB in order to hit things any more.

One can make a similar argument for orcs as a favored enemy, but I think goblins are more annoying, and the extra bonusses help more at the points where the goblins show up.

I have always been wondering: Rangers get a new fav. enemy every 5 levels and when they get to level 5, 10, etc. their bonus versus their previous fav. enemies increases. So if somebody were to make a sc Ranger and start with fav. enemie "Goblin" would he then end up with a bonus +4 versus Goblins at the end of the game?
In that case wouldn't it make more sense to start with a fav. enemy that you are going to meet throughout the game or even not untill the end of the game?
But I guess the question is academic since few people choose a sc Ranger.

I've played SC rangers before.

I'd say that the first FE a ranger should take is goblins, because a) you see plenty of them throughout the prelude and chapter one, and b) you'll see some pretty tough half-goblins towards the end of the game, which at least according to the HOF goblin slaying dagger, are in fact goblins. After that, you could take one of two routes, I suppose. Take a really dangerous baddy you will ba facing later in the game, or take a FE you'll be facing very soon. Either way, other than goblins (and late game half-goblins) there aren't any enemies that you will be facing constantly through out the game.

While there's something to be said for this 3e version of favored enemies, at least in BG2, you could pretty safely pick one really tough FE (like dragons) and know that you'd get full value for your choice.
