Hey all, i just bought this game yesterday and so far, i'm fairly intrugied by the setup of it.. but i have a few newbie questions. running the collector's edition..

1) I tried playing online via Gamespy, but after many failed attempts at entering the CD key on the cd envelope, it's still trying to convince me that it's "unknown". anyone know whats up?

2) since i'm not very good at it yet, what kind of character should i choose and how should i progress it? something simple yet effective.. i read most of the walkthrough so i know basics.

3) any personal tips you all can give that will improve my gaming experience??

thanks in advance..

gameplay

as i havent got online with it yet i cant answer first question.

but as to the other questions u will find a wide variety of possibilites, if u like getting up close and personal with mobs u will want a fighter class at some point, if u want massive damage to a lot of stuff maybe mage class, rogue is always good for the no chest left behind method and has some other unique abilities early on like being able to repair your armor and identify items. the only 1 i have found lacking so far(not to say its useless) is adept, especially in single player mode u get more then enough heal potions thru out the game to cover all your heals i have about 150 reg heal potions on me and close to 300 greater heals on my guy atm, and have never sold or bought any.but if going adept route guess u could always sell thos potions for extra cash for other items.

what i did my first time thru was create a char i planned on junking but that was well balanced early on, ran him thru sewer and into fargrove to get me a feel for the game and then junked him. and started from get go and ran thru whole way. u can win with any charecter combo. but with this method u will figure out your controls and get a decent idea of what your looking at.

friend went mage route and where early on u end up having to tank mobs because u run out of spells, later he was wiping everything out with 1 shot.

oh and having this site to grab maps and refer back to helps out a lot, i was in arrindale my first time thru before i ever looked for a reference tool for game. and missed a lot of stuff.

gameplay tip for lvling thou is stats early on first , tell u figure out what class u want to be. then use your skill pionts to get what u need on them. because then u get all learning bonus for the corresponding class also.

any class u pick is going to have to get close and personal with mobs early on except the rogue(rogue get throwing dagger) which is why ive tended to go with them. although once u enter dungeon u still will have to get close and personal, and u can get bows early on from mobs.

remeber u get 2 classes also 1 from creation and one once u hit fargrove and do the intiation quest. so if u want to be say fighter mage, i would usually go with the fighter first because of durability. fighter start out with heavy armor.

oh and whatever u decide dont play urgoth race, yes they are the strongest but because of there size there is a game bug that wont allow them to get everywhere yah need to go with out useing a game editor to move them into certain rooms and such. royal pain there.

hope that helps

Hello, and welcome to you both. :)

You can read about the various classes, what their learning bonuses are and what skills they get here:

http://www.gamebanshee.com/dungeonlords/classes.php

Just to point out that fighters do not start the game with heavy armor skill, that is a skill that comes with second (sometimes third) tier classes. New characters of any class can use light and medium armor. Fighters begin the game equipped with a leather doublet, in addition to having their suede doublet in their inventory, so that is nice. You will find better armor in the sewer/theatre than the suede doublet anyway, though.

Rogues get identify right from the start which is useful, as that is a skill not always available to other classes, but repair is a general skill that is available to all.

Adepts get access to other spells besides healing crystals...cure poison is a good one, plus two useful summons. The Crystal of Levitation is so fun...you can "fly" around instead of walking, plus crossing lakes is quite a bit easier. Adepts also get a learning bonus for armor (fighters do too).

One thing that always helped me right in the beginning of the game was getting a ranged weapon and climbing on a rock and shooting away. The shacks in the newbie forest are also good for that, and some of the goblins have bows they will drop. Once you clear away the "bad element" that is hanging around there, you can get on the porch, shoot and level up with relative safety. I set my options to more spawns and hard for that.

Fighter is always a good bet to start off with, but you can keep trying out the different classes to find something you like. As stated, Urgoths are a bad choice for the CE due to their size...and also due to the fact that they are the worst to raise intelligence and dexterity for. Agility isn't so good either, and really the only attributes they are good for is strength and vitality, which you can find nearly as good with a Zaur or a Dwarf. Here is info about the races:

*edit*

Oops, forgot about the Gamespy thing. I have not played using them, so can't comment on your problem but I have seen similiar complaints. I play multiplayer over LAN, so that might be an option if you have a housemate you can play with. :)

heya kat

ive been reading your post for about a year btw, play dl off and on, my main game is eq.

as for adepts you are right , i shouldnt bag them my first char was rog adept.
they do get lev and cure and get about best summon spell at higher lvls, . as for cure pioson thou, i found same as cure potions, get enough of them from mobs .

also if playing multiplayer adept has group heal spells at higher lvls.

i play multiplayer once in a while. when we have game day at friends house. we rotate game and since i brought out dl, its gone into the rotation.

to make it simple, there are all kinds of possibilities depend on how you like playing, and ive found a lot of what kat has put out over the past year very helpful for game play.

again hello kat and welcome to game dragon
have fun with the game

Yep, you're right. I forgot the Radient heal crystals which come in very handy in multiplayer. Your gameday idea sounds fun.
