I`m trying to go solo with a cleric/ranger. What`s the best way to handle Trolls? I can`t use a bow and all I have is a flame arrow spell and wand of missiles. Neither of which will finish off the pesky varmits.
I get them to nearly dead then I need some sort of acid or flame
I`m just starting so I`m only level 8/8.

Flame blade. That's a very simple remedy. Also, if you have level 6 spells or any of the various wands of the heavens, you could flame strike them. Also, since you have Druid spells too, you could summon a fire elemental or case fire seeds.

One way is to get a wand of fire or wand of the heavens ... they are both found in Ch. 1 in Irenicus' dungeon ... u can sell them and buy them back where they will be charged with 50 charges ... or if u assemble the Flail of Ages +3 from the stronghold quest area that will give 1 point of fire damage or acid damage required to finish off the creatures ...

Unfortunately, wand of fire can`t be used by my character - wand of heavens isn`t available yet.
Flame blade doesn`t do it either.
I haven`t got level 6 spells yet. Looks like I`ll have to wait a while.

There's dozens of swords out there that do fire and poison damage, but if you're a cleric I might suggest using the low level spell Flame Blade to finish trolls off.

I've never used Fire Seeds but I do believe that it's possible to hold them in inventory for 12 or 24 hours after casting.

Flame Blade can definitely kill a troll but he must be lying on the ground and "near-death". If he hasn't fallen yet and you keep beating him at near-death - try going backwards a little. Often trolls don't realise when they have to fall even when they have 1 hp only.

Try to assemble as fast as you can the Flail of ages, avoiding unnecesary fights using Sanctuary and rings of invisibility/air control. Then go back and show those trolls what pain is. Btw, before going into Nalia's keep, go to Druid's grove and find the scimitar Belm. Dual-wield it with the FoA and no troll will be alive longer than a few seconds.

Do not waste your fifth lvl slots on Flame Strike. Yep, it is not 6 lvl, but 5. Save your 5 lvl slots for the spell Iron Skins.

Belm and FOA sound a good combination, unfortunately, my cleric cant use scimitars.
I think I know where to get a wand of heavens. That should sort them out.

FLame blade does do it. Like Saros said, the troll has to be dead, waiting for the coup de grace.

You could also buy incendiary weapons (the potion kind) and drop those on the trolls. That would get pricey after a while.

I tried flame blade without any success. It`s ok to say you have to judge the distance, but when there are three or four of them at the same time, flame blade is not much good.
Wand of Heavens did a great job.

Yes the Wand is good...
Flame arrows also work well....if low on numbers, would only use them for the final hit.

Flame Blade has to be cast when you have a troll lying on the ground and his condition is Near-Death. No one said to cast the Blade in the beginning of combat. And if there are 3 more beating you and destroying your Iron Skins, AFTER you kill the troll lying on the ground use either the spell Sanctuary to run away and rest or the Ring of Air control for the same purpose.

Way too complicated. Get yourself the wand of heavens. In - Out and job done. No searching for the right position while being attacked by Torgal and friends, among others.

I always thought it was dumb that you couldn't use a torch for this exact reason. A torch should be a weapon- I dunno, club profeciency, 1d2 bludgeoning damage, 1d4 fire.

the obvious weapon of choice for a cleric is the Flail of Ages - which is assembled in Nalia's keep. finishes trolls off no problem - in fact during ToB, my level 25 Undead Hunter (Paladin variant) still uses the FoA (upgraded to +5 with poison head) to finish off trolls - actually, it is more useful than that - the 'slow' feature calms down some of the hasted trolls and golems.

if not FoA, I would recommend the club that does fire damage or a war-hammer that does electrical/cold damage.

of course, if you wait, you'll get Crom Feyr, which eats trolls fro breakfast.

Trouble is, before you get the flail of ages there are a whole load of trolls to deal with. Even with the FOA you have to use some sort of fire to finnish them off.

The FoA does fire damage and acid damage, as has been stated before.

Trouble is, before you get the flail of ages there are a whole load of trolls to deal with. Even with the FOA you have to use some sort of fire to finnish them off.

Flail of Ages:

Ice Head found in Nalia's keep First Floor NorthWestern Corner. Together with the Ring of Earth Control and some gold. No need to battle through anything to get there, a single Sanctuary or Invisibility prevents the fight with the one and only troll standing in the way.

Fire Head found in the Western part of the Second Floor of Nalia's Keep. A lot of golems there. If you don't touch any of the other weapons in the sarcophagi, the golems will not attack. The weapons there are the hammer Giantkin(together with the fire head in one sarcophagus), the axe FrostReaver(perfect weapon vs trolls BtW) and the Elven Court Bow(complete crap). Again, no need to fight in order to gain it, sneak through the corridors Invisible or Sanctuaried past the trolls and enter Nalia's aunt's quarters.

Acid Head found on Glacius the fighter. Now here you have to fight. There is a yuan-ti mage in the eastern part of the second floor of Nalia's keep. And 2 trolls with him.You must kill the mage in order to get the key to the locked doors of the keep, thus gaining entrance to Glacius. There are some secret doors, not hard to find. The Yuan-ti mage casts spells only if he sees you, unfortunately he has 2 stoneskins. With your ranger-cleric, the easiest way to kill the mage is being Improved Invisible(use THE RING OF AIR CONTROL), and with a wand of Heavens. The ring grants invisibility for ten rounds. I suggest killing only the mage and getting the key. Or another tactic - if you don't want to kill the mage, lead him up the coridor, i.e. attack while visible and run up the corridor, he will follow. Don't forget to use Chaotic Commands, because the Yuan-ti mage uses Chaos and similar spells. The moment he leaves his position, cast Sanctuary and loot the key. The fight with Glacius is not very hard. Use Hold Person, his saves are awful. And he has a full plate too, as well as cool potions.
Almost forgot, there is a Lightning trap on the door before Glacius. Use your Protection from Lightning spell or you'll die.

So you see, there isn't a whole lot of trolls to deal with to get the FoA. Actually, there are 2 at the most, if you play it right.

Poison Head - found on the second floor of Watcher's keep, the Slime Wizard Laboratory central pool. Here is a tough place, and anyway you cannot assemble the flail with its Poison head until you go to ToB and meet Cespenar the Imp. Don't rush it. The weapon becomes +4 and with additional poison damage.

Electricity head - loot from the corpse of Abazigal. The weapon becomes +5, gives MR +5% when equipped, Free Action and its elemental damage doubles(i.e. +2 fire, cold, acid, elec and poison damage). Of course, the weapon still can slow an opponent 33% of the time same as the usual +3 FoA.
