Intermerel Disappears

I was actually going to escort him, and asked him to follow. But somwhere along the way he stops following or something. Is this common? Is there a way to get to the next Mage Guild assignment if this one falls through?

This happens sometimes when you escort NPC's, they just seem to vanish.
Usually, I find it's when you take a really strange route that they can't pathfind, or when you go too fast, or a combination of the two. I've seen them, once they've lost track of you, head back to where they came from, so I'll assume that they go back to their starting location. I've never checked up on that, though, I usually reload.
Not sure if anyone else has this, but my NPC's seem to be rather dull. They always jump in front of my weapons when I'm trying to defend them. =P

If you're playing on a PC then you could try:
PlaceAtPC, "itermerel", 1, 1, 1

Everyone suffers from this problem Severion, the AI's handling of NPC followers is truly atrocious, and despite all the hype about Radiant AI, it's just as bad in Oblivion.
It's inexcusable as several 'amateur' modders have come up with ways to make NPC's behave rationally, so how come after all these years Bethesda can't be bothered.

I've wondered this about Bethesda with many aspects of their games. In my view, a lot of the "amateur" modders put Bethesda to complete and absolute shame. Not just in terms of things like AI, but also with things like textures and meshes. For example, if the Oblivion screen shots I've seen are anything to go by... then Better Bodies and the various face/hair replacers that modders have created for Morrowind far exceed the quality of any bodies and faces in ES IV.
To topic though, while this could be viewed as something of an exploit, if you continue to have trouble with escorted NPCs vanishing, you could also try Emma's VTA mod (assuming you are on PC). The Vvardenfell Travel Agency provides rings you can buy (they're quite expensive, which makes it less of a cheat) that summon various "travel agents." Like guild guides, they will transport you and any companions to a list of possible locations; NPC escort quests count as companions.

That is possibly due to the fact that every face in oblivion is custom made - you set a bunch of parameters for each face - it can get quite messy.
OT - or you could type "RA" into the console. Although that could put him back in Balmora.
