Trouble with Clockwork Chamber

OK, I know what to do to get pass this room, I just can't survive long enough to accomplish this. Does anybody have any advice? My "toughest guy" a 12 level paladin 156 hp can't make it even when he uses his healing spells and lay on hands. I have been at this room for two days now and have checked out different sites for tips but no luck yet. I have tried numerous ways with my different characters. Also I still receive fire damage even though i'm standing on the correct pedestal. Is this normal?

Not sure about the fire damage. I always use a character with evasion for most of the chambers. Characters that can attain a highish AC (e.g. 25+) without items are prime candidates for the chambers; I've never had much luck with tanks. IMO, even a wizard with Expertise, good Dex, and a couple of buff spells (e.g. Shield, Ghost Armor) is better than a tank.

Do you have anybody with evasion (monk, 2 levels of rogue)? How about a wizard or sorceror with Mirror Image and summoning spells? Improved Invisibility would be a help here too. A cleric with Animate Dead and Sanctuary could do ok as long as it didn't get disrupted.

I usually just use protection from fire, as that reduces the fire damage, if i do not have a character with evasion etc. A thief/wizard with improved invisibility and protection from fire, together with stoneskin will have little trouble with that chamber. So basically, look through your characters and try to figure out which one would be the best for the job rather than just immediately going for the strongest character such as a tank.

Oh I have used every character, I was just letting you know who my tank was.(i have been trying for 2 days and I dont give up easily) Unfortunatly my wiz doesnt have improved invis or stone skin. Basically i am just whining, I know after trying different methods I will get past this, its just that after two days at this room i am starting to lose it. :)

I hate to break it to you, but the Chamber of Battle and the Chamber of Immolation are both tougher than the Chamber of Clockwork. You need to find something that works, as much for the later chambers as for getting past the Chamber of Clockwork.

Why doesn't your wizard have improved invisibility and/or stoneskin? Is it due to a lack of wizard levels because of multiclassing, or is it access to scrolls? I'm sure there's at least a stoneskin scroll available before then.

What exactly is your party (classes and levels)? Seeing as a decent wizard, cleric or monk (or rogue) shouldn't have too much trouble with the 8 Chambers, it's tough to get a handle on why you are struggling so much to get past this particular chamber. Are you running through the gears?

are you talking about the last chamber? why do people complain about that chamber..? i thought all of the chambers were easy.

i used a sorcerer for that. cast mirror image so that you wont be hit. when you run out of images, cast again.. you should be able to cast it 6-7 times..that is a maximum of 56 images...

or you can use your bard...bards get mirror images. and they can summon pretty well.

summon undead. (even if you dont have the spell..you should have a Summon undead wand by now..you should have won it in battle square. it has about 35 charges, iirc). i dont know what other summoning spells you have.. summon shades, shadow, whatever. when your summon dies, just keep summoning.

when i played it, i only summoned 1 zombie lord and 1 fire elemental (since fire elementals are immune to fire, i assume). they killed the monks and didn't even die in the end...when i left the monastery, the elemental and the undead were still alive and bashing at each other and duking it out in the chamber, since the undead wasn't protected from evil.

funny.

My party: Paladin lv12, Two fighters lv12, rogue lv11, cleric lv11 and wizard lv11, keep in mind I can leave the monastary to level up the characters at level 11 pretty quick.
No I dont run through the gears and there were a couple of scrolls that I failed to write in my spellbook. I'm gonna give agc28 ideas a try. Thanks for everyones help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Something tells me the summoning wands won't be of much use at this point in the game. ;)

Wow, all these posts and not one comment about the actual solution to the exploding monks in the Clockwork chamber.

What you do when a monk's explosion countdown seems about to start is watch the walls of the chamber for a flashing light. There are three buttons around the room, each of which can prevent a monk from exploding. Be careful not to run over the blades as you are moving to the appropriate (i.e. flashing) button.

As far as dealing with this room in general, I've always used a cleric and summoned a number of baddies to mix it up with the monks, and then I have my cleric get out of melee and try to get near the next button that I expect to light up.

This chamber is not all that difficult as long as you can get your summons into action against the monks and disengage from melee, so that you can get to the right turn-off buttons before each monk explodes.
