Armor check penalty is about the only reason for single weapon with no shield I can think off.
However, if equipping weapons in the off-hand you endure an attack penalty

so there is no point in NOT having SOMETHING in the offhand unless your a mage and dont want the armor check penalty... eh?

You can equip a twohanded weapon. Also, over at
PRC - The Player Resource Consortium, there are some Prestige Classes who gain an advantage.

I never ran into any trouble and I'm using this 3 years non-stop. The OC's work perfectly as do most mods. Some (maybe 3) mods specifically state they don't support PrC, but that's about it.
Besides, the forummembers of the PrC are ery helpful to clear up any technical issues.
I can't garantuee you won't have any trouble at all, since each PC is individual, but I haven't got any problems at all.

Or a rogue and want to sneak...
There is always roleplaying, and do you get 1.5x your strength bonus, rather than 1x? I know you get that in NWN2

Only with non-light weapons and never in NWN1.

If your parry skill is high enough, you almost never need to worry about holding a shield. I just sell all the shields I get. They usually go for a pretty penny, and buying weapons and armor is more beneficial in my opinion.

First of all: parry is bugged. It doesn't grant you all the parries you're entitled to.
Secondly: solely holding a single weapon does preclude you of using any extra abilities on shields or offhandweapons, like Energy Resistances and the like.

That's 3.5, so no go at NWN1.

I think that's even in 3.0, but even then, it isn't in NWN. There are a few mods that allow it, IIRC. Search the Vault.

[Strength added to: ] damage rolls when using a melee weapon or a thrown weapon. (Exceptions: Off-hand attacks receive only half the Strength modifier, while two-handed attacks receive one and a half times the Strength modifier. A Strength penalty, but not a bonus, applies to attacks made with a bow or a sling.)
Yup, you're right, apparently. I didn't know the bit about off-hand getting half str mod.
