Rune Spells

I have aquired several rune stones, but unlike nether spells, I have no guide as to which stones to combine to cast spells. Is there a spell book or something that I have not gotten yet? I am at level 12 and I have level 7 rune magic.

You can buy rune spells from a certain vendor. He is later in the game. Try a search on rune magic if you don't mind a spoiler as to his identity. If you want to use rune magic before then I think there are a few spells at celestial temples? and gamebanshee has spells for rune magic on the Dungeon Lords page. The way it works is you have to have 1) the spell 2) the stones. When you cast the spell the stones aren't destroyed rather they lose their charge temporarily and then recharge. When you try to cast a spell using uncharged stones it does not work, but if you have tons of copies of stones you can cast the spells more than once.
A disadvantage of rune magic is that some of the spells use the same stones to power up and the stones cost money. But the advantage is that for X stone I have many spells that I can use ie flexibility. you don't have flexibility in arcane for example. If you have 20 fireball books you cast 20 fireballs and not 10 fireballs 10 freeze.

I tried buying a stack of rune stones, cost me a fortune...but only one of each shows, and even though I have the stones for the rune spells I have, the spells still show a charge of zero. How are you supposed to combine the stones? or are they supposed to do it automatically if you have them in your inventory?

They combine automatically. And say a spell takes stone A and stone B. Even if you have 100 As if you have only 1 B you can only cast the spell once untill stone B recharges. So its like that story problem from math where you have X slices of cheese and Y slices of bread and how many sandwiches can you make? You also have to have the spell unlike nether magic. So just having stones and looking at gamebanshee isn't enough...you need the spells too.
I like arcane best. By the end of the game its easy to have 1 to 2 hundred blast novas. Some other spells are better for 1 or 2 nasty monsters but nothing clears the masses like blast nova. For 1 nasty monster whirlwind and ice shards is pretty decent. Catacylysm is pretty good too haha.

Frankly, rune magic has the potential to be interesting in this game but many of the spells are broken and thusly it isn't worth concentrating on IMO. There are a couple rune spells that are ok (shards of stone is a pretty decent offensive spell) but as it is such a pain to run to "mr rune sales guy" (only one vendor has a good selection of spells) every time you want to buy a new spell...it's more than a bit tiresome.
For sheer offensive power arcane is better, I think. Also, even though some arcane spells are more expensive, overall they are cheaper to buy. Those rune stones and spells will cost a pretty penny unless you have a very high bargain skill.

Hi gang
Just thought I'd pass along a few thoughts about using rune magic.
There are some good spells out there.
Sanctuary-- This spell will stop or weaken magic attacks against you. Depending on the foe you are fighting, it can be very usefull. It works the same as the Wards of Fire or Ice.
Shards of Stone-- I find this spell superior to the some arcane spells for close range usage. It causes more damage than flametrower or ice shards for example. Works great on Athena guardians
Rune Armour-- Nothing wrong with adding a little armour, right?
Boon Armour-- This can be used in multiplayer to help protect everyone in the party. You can also cast other "boon" spells to help enhance the fighting qualities of your party as well.
