I've started playing Arcanum recently and I'm having a few problems. At the Shrouded Hills Inn, in the room where we're supposed to meet Elder Joachim, I can't read the note to Virgil (I right click on it, but nothing happens) and therefore the subsequent dialogue with Virgil does not take place. Besides, I read we're supposed to find some amulets on the dead bodies and I can't find any (something like this has happened before at the Crash Site, when I met the assassin near the altar; he was supposed to have an amulet similar to the dead ogre's, but he didn't. Oh, and I couldn't read Wilhemina's note to Jared as well.)

I already have the Arcanum 1074 patch, btw. What can I do to fix this?

For reading the note, you need to either drag it to one of the hotkey slots and use it from there or drag it to the hand icon on the rightmost side of the inventory screen.
As for the amulets, the assassins should have them equipped, not stashed away in their inventory. When you loot a corpse, press the equipped items button (the left circular one above their inventory grid) to see what they're equipped with.

Indeed it's not the npcs that need to read any documents but rather yourself. Sometimes dialogues don't start until certain areas are reached or hotspots, most of the time I've found that by walking away or out of a room has activated certain dialogues.
