Do resistance from different items stack?

I was wondering if the resistance given by different items is stacking. For example if I wear a ring with 25% fire resistance and a shield with 10% fire resistance does it mean that I have 35% fire resistance (10% + 25%), or I just have the biggest resistance from one of the items I wear (in that case 25%)?

You can actually see what the total is and where each percentage comes from if you select the spells page and then select the tab farthest on the right (I believe).

There is a list of ALL effects on your character here as well.

Difference of Shield and Reistence

What is the difference if I have an item that does, say Fire Shield, rather than an item that does Fire Resistance?
This effect does two different things. First, just like Shield, it adds M% directly to the Armor Rating of the target (without negatively affecting the target's Spell Effectiveness). Secondly, it provides M% Resist Fire, thus reducing Fire Damage by M%. Fire resistance effects from Fire Shield and Resist Fire are cumulative.
Quoted off the UESP page. A resist spell only does one of those things, i.e. it just provides the resistance factor.
