I've just started playing Ice Wind Dale. I'm getting ed all the time. Especially my human mage. Bg2 is much easier. So I wondered if you have a character line up... I like to use paladins.

My favorite....

2 Fighters (Paladins are OK)
1 Cleric
1 Thief
1 Ranger
1 Mage

Pretty good balance and later (Heart of Winter) very sustainable.... Image

As has been well documented in other threads, my party is short.

Dwarven Fighter (Agavarden- Strong axe wielder. Kicks butt)
Halfling Fighter (Devanna Winterroot- wields shortswords- favorite character.)
Dwarven Fighter/Cleric (Strong in both classes. Nice third fighter)
Halfling Fighter/Thief (Great backstabber. Stealth machine)
Dwarven Cleric/Thief (Picks locks and takes out traps. Great support char.)
Gnomish Illusionist (Had to have a mage. Only option.)

This makes a very strong fighter oriented party, and they're all very resistant to magic. Surprisingly powerful.

My most recent party (second time through):

Dwarven fighter
Elven multiclass fighter/thief
Human ranger dualled to cleric
Elven bard
Human fighter dualled to druid
Human fighter dualled to mage

So sue me, I like proficiencies. I played it on HOF mode until I started hunting hungry lizardmen. Now I'm just doing Insane mode, again.

You like pallys eh?

Try...

Paladin x5
Thief dualled to mage at levels 7-9.

Plenty of healing there too. You could drop 1 paladin for a cleric, a fighter/cleric or a ranger/cleric (dual/multi). Maybe drop one for a bard too - spell support while your thief is pre-dualled and awesome magical instruments.

You could still have 3 paladins at that rate.

I have some strats posted on the IWD section. Image

multi Halfing Fighter/Thief
2x multi Gnome Fighter/Illusionist
multi Gnome Cleric/Illusionist

Currently going through HOW from scratch. I take a fairly simplistic approach:-

3 x fighters (each with different specialist abilities - long sword, hammer and axe)
Mage
Cleric/Mage
Thief/Cleric

The fighter perform as a shield for the 3 spellcasters who when they are not casting spells, healing or turning undead are bashing away with slings.

Hey! What a rip-off! You read this on BGDungeon didn't you? Image
Anyway, the second time I went through BG1, I had an "Evil Munchkin Party":

Me (hacked gnomish bard)
Montaron
Kagain
Yeslick (+ Helm of Opposite Alignment Image )
Quayle (alright he's chaotic neutral... second best thing)
Tiax

Then I tried this party out in IWD, "The Dwarven Clan" (pretty hacked):

dwarven paladin
dwarven fighter
dwarven ranger, dualled to cleric
halfling thief
dwarven druid
gnomish (svirfnebli) bard

It's so cool to see them fighting their way through a dungeon!

No, Pope, not everyone is like you! I didn't steal the idea from any lame websites. It comes from a crazy idea that this is a role-playing game. I thought it is far more realistic that you would adventure with your friends and those you are familiar with. How often would a human barbarian be running around with a half-elven conjurer, a kensai-mage, a halfling thief, an dwarven fighter, and a ranger-cleric? Not likely! You'd adventure with those people you know. Much more likely you'd be all of the same race, or pretty close to it. I also had a party of *groan* all elves, but after BG2, I'm pretty tired of elves! Image They kicked butt, though. And none of my groups were hacked.
