I think the thief(namely I) can be the most powerful class in the game with a powerful long sword equipped and the backstab multiplier. Let me know what everyone else thinks

Well...the problem with thieves is that if they happen to fail thier backstab...say theres a stoneskin there or maybe its a barbarian thats immune to backstab...they kinda just suck for melee. So nah...backstabs nice but...most powerful?...

just remember that the backstab can only be done once. most powerful PC doesn't mean the one who can deliver the most damage with one hit. a kensai/thief can use the kai shot, and has the extra proficiency slots for weapon specialization for even more damage when doing a backstab.

I should have said most powerful "true class".

The most powerful class is the kensai/mage. All nice proficencies plus all the nice spells.

Need stealth? Cast improve invisibility + cloak of nondetection then disintegrate foe. More effective than backstab.

Firkaag? cloudkill 2 times/ stoneskin/Lightning bolt 2 times and he is dead. If he is not, finish him with kai ability + tenser's transformation, using the dragonkiller sword.

Bodhi? incendiary cloud + Daystar's ability plus magic missiles and she is a goner.

Irenicus? Summon Nishru, get out of the way and when his spells are off, kill him with kai, tenser's transformation kit.

Final Irenicus? Cast own demons and beasts and wait while they kill each other. Then turn to the slayer + improvements and finish him off.

Oh I do not doubt the "power" of the Kensai/mage. However, with the thief I can become invisible and non-detectable(with the cloak). If I am around level 19 or so my THACO with a good short sword; and one of the girdles of giant strenght; is around a 4 or so. With the plus 4 from backstab it is low enough to hit most anything. put a couple of enchantments to hit and I will do like 60+ dmg. To a mage that means almost utter death!!!

Actually if you think about it with the girdle, that plus four short sword, the base could be 18Dmg. 1d6 + 4 +8(str bonus). Multiply the backstab *5 = 90dmg.

WOOOHOOO

Check out a thread about backstabbing - done to death, some fool got 256 or something.

Call for Pat Bou regarding PC's - he'll sell you the sorcerer till you almost believe him Image

Its all in the old pages my friends. I know you're lazy but we can't be arsed either. Image

Backstabs are the most powerful single attack in the game (no argument there). It is however only good if it connects...

(GETTING ON SOAP BOX)
Ok level 12/16 kensai mage with 5+ in Flail, wielding FOA and Defender easthaven
casts improv haste, stoneskin, mirror image, blur, spirtual armor, spell immunity:enchantment, fireshield red, fireshield blue, improv invisiblity and lastly tensers transformation. 278 hp -6 thaco (never misses except crit), 20 attacks in 2 rnds (with lvl 50 rules because of grand mastery fix)
Now try to backstab me.
for your one attack (assuming it hits (lets say you dont miss), either the stoneskin stops it, or the mirror image) but you take 1-4+1 + 1-4+1 damage just for attacking me. As you are now visible i attack hitting you 9 out of 10 times (in 1 round) and doing 25-80 damage per hit while every other hit you could be slowed by the FOA (testing shows it slows about every 1 in 4 hits).Hmm thief dont sound very powerful 2 me.

------------------
In such times we may need the powerful magics of the past, and the heroes to wield them.

There is no single best class in BG2. Leaving aside the issue of class-specific weapons, every character class needs to be evaluated in terms of specific threats, and the classes were deliberately created to interact and protect one another. Without the basic fighter-thief-cleric-mage grouping in some fashion in your game, you're dead.

And all other discussion of "best class" seems to me a little beside the point.

Now a little offtopic.
In another thread you are testing weapons, but we are all interested in the classes themselves. After we find the best equipment/weapon (set and skill) for a given class we can try to find which is the best fighting class.
Of course I meant those spellcaster duals, like that Kensai/Mage. We should find the best enhancements and than simply test them against each other (after starting the fight there would no more spells cast).
There are lot of participants like Kensai/Mage, Berserker/Mage, Ranger/Cleric, Berserker/Cleric or Fighter/Mage/Cleric.

Ooops, while I wrote there were some new posts. I agree that there is no single "best" class (see my post on the other threads).
But we can focus on a specific ability (eg. fighting skills with all the enhancements) and see which can do better in that.

I had a specific goal when I posted this site; to see how people view power versus versatility and something called the "fun factor".
So you see Fable I am totally aware of the importance of each class. for do you really assume that I would list the thief as The most powerful melee character? It is all relative i.e. fighter type classes will always be best at; you guessed it; fighting!
