For races you are on the right track. Humans and Moon elves are very solid picks. If you are going pure bard, the Moon elf longbow proficiency cannot be underestimated. It's almost worth the human's extra feat.
For multiclass I made a Gnome which was fun, but a human is probably better. Take 4-5 levles of Fighter/Barbarian/Ranger to get 4 base attacks per round.
One last idea, the bard has a really cool source of skill boosting through its song. It's often overlooked that a bard can put a parry focused character over the top. I tried out a Rapier weilding Wood Elf Bard/Duelist wich was ALOT of fun. With a higher level cap you can throw in some Weapon Master for more goodness.
I made a breastplate wearin' greatsword wieldin' drow elf bard that was fun and very powerful, but extremely slow progression at the beginning.
I don't recommend this for the beginner as it might take some of the fun out of the game. But the build was quite powerful at later levels with the spell resistance and all.
I can post the build if you are interested, if not I would stick to a human or moon elf. Bard multi's nicely with arcane archer if you want to multi class a bit.
The AA build would work well in the OC with a tank npc or two. I used to play this build online in NWN which was fun because I was popular and could deal damage very quickly as well.
