Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles Expansions

Hi, All!
Carol here. I finished playing Oblivion awhile ago and have now decided to play both expansion sets. Do I have to install Oblivion in order to play the expansions? I saved my last save from Oblivion and can install that to the expansions so I can have my original character. Is that what I need to do? As you all know by now, I am not that knowledgeable about what I can (must) do to play these games. Also, I was reading the installation directions for Knights of the Nine and it says to install Patch 1.1 first. If so, how do I go about this? Can anyone answer my questions?
Thank you.
Carol

You need Oblivion installed to use the expansions. You should be able to play the expansions with your existing character.

Patches can be found on the elder scrolls website. 1.2 is out now (and completely compatible with Knights of the Nine still, obviously), just download and double click.
I will advise that you have NOTHING else open. Unlike a lot of install programs that say you shouldn't have anything else open, this one is absolute fact because it extracts each and every single text piece of all textures and meshes of oblivion (basically, everything you see in all square miles in text format, HUGE).

Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles Expansion Packs
Hi!
Carol again. OK, I give up!!! I have installed Oblivion, The Knights of the Nine Expansion Pack (and the patch), and Shivering Isles. I tried to copy my last Savegame from when I played Oblivion several months ago but NO GO. I get a message that says "Windows does not support this CD-R format. Please try another disc." What is going on? I really do not want to play Oblivion all over since it was such a long game. How do I get my Savegame into Oblivion so I can continue with the expansions? Also, how do I access the expansions since they do not appear on the Oblivion menu? Am I stupid or what?
PLEASE HELP!!! I am so frustrated right now.
Thanks.
Carol

I've never played on the PC, but in Morrowind: GOTY Edition for Xbox, you can just walk into the expansion area. Try loading your character in regular Oblivion then walking to the expansion area?

Expansions are like morrowind, they just blend seemlessly into the game itself. No need for multiple icons or anything like that (but you DO need to go to "Data Files" in the opening screen for oblivion and make sure the addons are checked).
As for the CD-R or whatnot, that's not an oblivion problem or whatever. If it's an old CDR, it could be just too scratched up to use.

Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles Expansion Packs
HI!
Carol here. I found the answer. I had to start a new game, save right away to create the Save File in Oblivion. Then I copied my last Savegame into it and THERE IT IS!. So now on to the expansions.
Thanks to all of you.

Carol, you should not have had to start a new game. But so long as you're happy, that's fine.

Actually, if I'm understanding this, then yes she had to do this. Many games created have to be booted up and used even with the basics before certain functions work and certain files are added to the directory.
I know this because every time I do a system recovery, nothing off my PC is formatted except for Windows XP, and all my games are still quite in tact. But they don't work because Windows XP doesn't have it in the registry or whatnot, and the ones that do work don't even need the registry to begin with.

Yeah, but Bethsoft has made a point of issuing add-ons (such as the pair for Morrowind) that never required a new character to enjoy. And as I recall, in the Elder Scrolls Oblivion forum it was pointed out that Knights of the Nine could be played with your current character. I didn't hang around for Shivering Isles, but I'm assuming it also fits the bill.

Yeah, but she's saying that her old character was copied to the save folder but didn't work, so she created a new character, deleted it, then put the old one in and now it does work.
At least, that's what I'm reading.

Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles Expansion Packs
Hi!
Carol again. I have a question. Can I put off going into the Shivering Isles until I do the Knights of the Nine quests or do I have to start Shivering Isles after 2 days of waiting? Also, once in Shivering Isles area, can I go back out if I want to (to sell items or whatever) or are there merchants in Shivering Isles? I have also been notified of other quests to be done from the Downloads from the Knights of the Nine expansion. I know you will probably think that I don't know what I am doing but I would like to be prepared with some answers before starting.
Thanks for all your help.

There isn't a single quest in the game that has a time limit other than the quest where you go fetch the ring from under the well as a mages guild recommendation (that's got a time limit of merely how long you can hold your breath).
Shivering isles is a completely new world, not just a small area. It's a quarter of the size of normal oblivion, with a few towns and many merchants. It's also easy to leave just as you came in.
Though, I will say this, you're gonna come to a point where you have to choose a side of two hallways to enter, one Mania, and one Dementia. Mania is good, Dementia is Evil if I remember right, and once you go through one of them, it's a permanent choice.

entering Shivering Isles
I loaded & went to S.I. (360), got into the chamberlain, sat down as requested, but was unable to speak to him, pressing green (A) always made me stand up, he said sit down. On & on forever. I went in & out repeatedly- same thing. I defragged and removed S.I. Started over & now X-box live says that it's loaded again ( by reloading) but it's not there( not the note not the island) Is this sovable on the 360 or should I just wait for the disk 2 come out? Looks like there"s lots of problems with it, should the disk solve these?. Thanx ladyluck47

You should start your own thread for this instead of hijacking someone elses thread.

As Siberys said--the first post gives us the content of a thread. And as the question that started this thread has been answered, it's closed.
