Hunting them Beasties (spoiler)

I've been doing the quest that Mendas from Ulgoth's beard gives you in TOtSC and got up to the Kagoul floor of the wrecked ship.. Up until now it's been a possible but still pretty challenging task to kill all the Werewolfs and other varieties, but I just haven't been able to get through this room.. Any tips or anything?

My party - Fighter/Cleric - Combat + healing/defensive spells
- Fighter/Thief - combat + trapping/pocketing
- Mage/Thief - Offensive spells + Locks/stealth + wands
- Mage/cleric - Defensive Spells/healing + wands

All around level 7

Here is where your fighter/thief comes into his own. Forget about your other characters. Enter with just your thief, hidden of course. Backstab and make a sharp exit. Repeat ad infinitum. Ensure that when you attack your exit is clear. Positioning is all important.

Most of the wolfweres on that level aren't a big problem, but Karoug is a greater wolfwere, which means that he can only be injured with a +2 or better weapon made of silver. Karoug is really the main problem. There are only a few melee weapons in the game that can hurt him, including Werebane (the silver dagger), the Sword of Balduran, and the Bastard Sword +1, +3 vs. Shapeshifters (Kondar). I've read that Flame Tongue will hurt him, but I haven't confirmed that myself (it's made of silver, and it's +2 against regenerating creatures). Every other melee weapon is ineffective.

At 7th level, your Fighter/Thief and Mage/Thief can beat the crap out of Karoug and the rest of them if you buff up before the fight and use the right weapons. Potions of Haste, Potions of Strength, Potions of Invisibility, and backstabbing should be a standard part of your repertoire. Unfortunately, there aren't any blunt weapons that will hurt Karoug, so there aren't many items your Fighter/Cleric and Mage/Cleric can use against him besides the Necklace of Missiles and Wands of Fire, which aren't party-friendly. So they can either stay out of the way or concentrate on the lesser monsters.

When I played BG1 with a Cleric/Ranger and Imoen (Thief dualled to Conjurer), I protected my Cleric/Ranger against fire with the Ring of Fire Protection and a scroll or a potion, and I let Imoen blast away with a Wand of Fire. When all of the wolfweres besides Karoug were dead, I had Imoen sneak up behind him and backstab him with the silver dagger. It was a vey dangerous situation, but it wasn't impossible. Potions of haste and strength really help in a situation like that--even Imoen can do respectable amounts of damage if you raise her strength to 18, and a potion of haste can help her to run in and out of the thick of things.

You've just added some of the things that I had forgotten and was about to mention.
In addition use your Cleric for buffing. Also to do a lot of damage with your wand of fire/fireball spells or equivalent, use your thief to draw all of the enemy close together. Then using stealth/ invisibility etc. move your thief/mage out of sight at one end of the room and then use fireball etc. to attack them all simultaneously. Immediately afterwards hide. This tactic can also be repeated. I always equip Imoen with Greywolf's sword, but then I usually have her as a pure thief. Whilst I have used this tactic, I must admit that I usually just use Deder to backstab.

I couldn't get on the net much for a couple of days, but having now killed Karoug and co., your replies could have made the job WAY easier.. Instead I relied on quaffing just about everything I had and using all the cleric skills to buff my party to hell.. Then Going upstairs and basing my attack on a hell of a lot of luck with hold person spells and greater malison.. I killed Karoug purely with wands and spells

Now.. I think i might go back and do it a more conservative way

Somewhat OT. I completed this quest recently, didn't have any problems with Karoug, my protagonist (Berserker/thief pretty high level too) made short work of him. My problem was that after the quest was done, and I was back on the mainland I still had the baby in my back-pack, or should I call it a papoose now?:laugh:
